I've come across a free set of seats I would like to use for my challenge car but I want to dye them from gray to black so they match my interior. Has anyone done this with real fabic dye and not the spray paint stuff? If so how did it come out?

The color may not come out evenly depending on existing stains, grease, etc. on the fabric. It's designed for new fabric. Make sure you rinse very well before reinstalling, and seal them with some of that 3M fabric protector to help the color from bleeding into your clothes.

I dyed some head & wrist sweat bands yellow with some Rit dye, so I could be Paullie Bleeker for Halloween one year.

I know it's not exactly on the scale of a seat cover, but the directions for washing machine dying were simple enough, and the results were great. Colors didn't bleed at all.

If you can't get the seat fabric in a washing machine or some other large-ish tub, the aerosol stuff is probably going to be your best bet.

I've seen the parts store aerosol dye get stuff close enough that most wouldn't notice a difference without really looking, but the gray I've seen might be easier to match than black, especially if the black is faded.
