Its been happening for about a year now, the glove box won't always open. However, it could always be opened if I locked it, and opened it back up. Sometimes it would take a little bit of force, but it would always open. Today, I was trying to open it, and the latch just came off, the entire thing. Any ideas on how to get into it? I don't "need" to get into it, but I do need to get into it, its holding the insurance information, and my sunglasses.
Lol...I sold an E30 a couple of years ago that I never did get into the glovebox. I have no idea what was in there. Coulda been a million dollars for all I know.

Really? Nothing? I gotta figure that the GRM group would know some special trick to get into it.

Look at the latch and you'll see a piece that is curved downwards from the right hand side to the left.
Push the bottom end of it to the right .

Is the metal part still there? If it is put your knees on the lid and push up/forward into the dash (like your trying to close it)
if its all gone reach toward the firewall and rip it out.
This is about the only ways i have been able to get in to them. about 10-13 all together.
Search on R3V, common issue and a common fix.
there is a glovebox in E30s????
There's two little pieces of plastic inside the latch that break in half. I took mine apart, used a tiny drill bit and some tiny screws from the inside of a VCR to put the pieces back together. I was afraid using glue would gum up the whole works. Anyway, mine wouldn't close half the time, but usually opened. Good luck!
I love this board. Comedy.
just stick your finger in and push the latch to the side while lifting the glovebox with yourother hand.

Okay, so a little more detail here. Here are the pictures I took. Sorry for the poor lighting and quality, I only have a cell phone camera. I have tried pushing that "J" hook, nothing happened.
This one is the broken latch, the backside
And this one is the latch ON the glovebox.
This is one where a shotgun IS the answer.

I'm thinkin that. Going to get a drill, drill through the plastic, and figure it out from there. Its clear I need a new latch anyways...
push the J hook to the right. HARDER.
it IS the latch

Never seen anyone do it until I met my girlfriend.

Haven't tried yet. I'm in college, the garage is 3 blocks away, and I'm in class until 6 tonight. I might have a chance at about 3PM.

It can happen that the J hook breaks off leaving the rest of the latch assembly in place. Lots of posts in various sites have lots of suggestions, none of which worked for me.
I ended up drilling out holes in the front of the latch and eventually breaking the plastic extrusions that held the pins for the latch pivot. Buy a replacement latch and look at it and you'll see that if you drill just near the top right and top left of the key cylinder you can drill through the extrusions and break them off. The front of the latch should come off then. At that point you should be able to use a screwdriver to push the remainder of the j-hook to the right and release the pawls holding the box up. Mine was broken off at the pivot and was very difficult to push hard enough to disengage, but it finally worked.
It might be better to drill in a little more to the ouside and down to get below the plastic extrusions and get a screwdriver in there to pry up and break them off. I eventually broke mine off by prying from the back of the latch but I think that's the hard way.
Use masking tape with rolled up paper or cardboard underneath to protect the glove box from slips with sharp objects or drill bits.
Ralph.

When I bought my E30, the glove box latch was the same. A new latch assembly is available from Pelican.

I had a similar problem, I broke the glove box on my volvo 940 trying to get my gun out. Now it just stays open.

Note: Someone carried a gun in the glove box of a Volvo.

I guess you could say he left the safety on.
