It's an 04 325xit.
This is just to get an idea of what needs to be done when I get the car back from a friend;
Replacing the low beams, can this be accomplished with the headlights on the vehicle or is it easier to remove?
Fog lights, I have a set of fusion fogs laying around to attempt a retrofit. Otherwise, what's a good halogen 'bad weather' bulb IE 3k/yellow in light output?
The sunroof, only slides open halfway then gets stuck, same with the sunroof shade. Easy fix or PITA?
Windows, seem to stick/open slowly. Is this a window regulator/motor issue or something else?
It looks like there is a small oil leak, what are the common areas?
Car needs to go to the dealer for an airbag recall, are there any 'hidden features' I can have activated? IE blinkers flash on lock/unlock, 1 click on turn signals activate 3 blink and then turn off
Aux input, what's the easiest way to add one?
Seat heaters, is there a way to have them come on at the last setting or do bmws always default to 'off' on startup?
Edit, almost forgot.
Car had a cel p0313 misfire detected with low fuel.
Car had the gas light on when I bought it and unknown number of miles were driven with it on. Is this an issue I need to look into, or just a symptom of running on E?
Love the wagons. There is lots of e46 info on here, and on the forums. Quick responses to the questions I'm familiar with:
-No need to pull headlights to replace low beam bulbs, but you'll have to do it by feel. You'll know when the socket twists into place.
-I view sunroofs as voodoo magic, and have never had the nerve to fool with one. Unless you REALLY want it to work, I'd just leave it alone OR take it to a shop that does them all the time and knows the tricks. Its the kind of problem that it is easy to make worse while trying to solve, and I saw one of my friends drive around for 2 weeks in winter with a stuck open roof.
-window regulators are known weakness. I haven't had any motor failure issues. Slow up/down can either mean that the factory grease has turned into sticky paste, or that the plastic slider plates are cracked/binding/broken. If the regulator wires aren't badly kinked, there are slider repair kits on ebay. you can also google "e46 regulator zip tie trick" for a way to bodge them together. Honestly tho, the $4 kit on ebay is worth it.
-As far as I know, the most common oil leak is the gasket where the oil filter housing joints the block. The housing sits right over the alternator & supposedly if the leak gets bad enough it can drip into the alternator and kill it. The gasket is like $6. If you do a cooling system refresh, you can do it then, as you have to remove the fan shroud, and fan itself it its an autobox. This repair is on my personal to do list.
-The Aux input cable is $35-40 on eeuroparts, and the instructions are good, it takes 15 min. Instead of running the cable into the glove box, I instead routed it alongside the shifter, behind the handbrake, and into the side of the center storage cubby. I'm thinking about changing it to run out of the ashtray.
Low beams - can be done in car. Headlight assemblies are, however, very easy to remove.
Sunroof - PIA but well documented on bimmerforums and E46fanatics
Window regulators fail with regularity
Most common oil leak is the OFHG - oil filter housing gasket. With the airbox off look down at the engine block. If you see oil pooled in the ribs on the block it's the OFHG. Pretty easy job and well documented.
P0313 with low fuel light on? Clear the code and see if it comes back before doing anything else.

My sunroof failed but the casette was replaced by the CPO warranty. If you tackle it, get a spool of trimmer string and rod out the sunroof drains while you're in there. Fair warning - you have to take out nearly the entire interior to get the headliner down. At least I did. While the headliner is out, get it recovered.
Oil leak could be valve cover gasket or the oil filter housing gasket. Also the CCV gets plugged and will smoke lightly from under the hood on warmup.
You can grease the window sliders and use the zip tie kludge but really, for $30 each or less, why take the door apart twice? Just replace them before they fail completely and stop holding the window up. 30 minutes each and not difficult at all.

Valve cover is passenger side and OFHG is driver side. That should help narrow it down. CCV is also a good call but I think these two are more likely or at least more obvious. If it's neither of these then I'd look at the CCV.
