I have my Dad's 90 Civic Wagon to do some exhaust work, and it just started having two problems that sometimes seem related and other times do not.
The first problem is the key getting stuck in the ignition. This happens intermittently, and after fiddling with it for a while it eventually comes out. When it does, it does it like normal, meaning it feels just like it normally does when it comes out. But when it gets stuck all you can do it start the car back up and shut it off until it decides to come out. And it's not the steering wheel or shift lever (auto) that makes it lock, as I've check those things multiple times.
The second problem that seemed to start at the same time as the first, is the shift lever getting stuck in park. When this happens, the button on the shifter won't go in to release the lever. There is actually a key slot in the shifter housing that is intended to unlock the shifter if this happens. I've only seen this on the wagon. The problem is that sometimes these two problems happen at the same time, so the key is stuck in the ignition and can't be used to unlock the shifter, so you are screwed at that point.
I haven't looked into this yet, but thought I'd ask here in case someone knows of some common problem with these. I'm thinking it's something to do with the park-key interlock, if it has one, but I"m not familiar with these cars with automatic transmissions. Thanks in advance.
