My current DD is rolling on stock 14x5.5" wheels and calls for a 185/65R14 tire. Moving up to a 195/60R14 would cost me nothing, but 5.5" is typically the narrowest allowable rim for that size. Will this have any adverse effects on the handling/feedback/response? This is a Prizm/Corolla I'm dealing with, so removing feedback is going to result in there being none at all.

Rim and tire sizes for this (proposed) change are not significant.

How do the current tires (grip and carcass) compare to the new tires?

If the new tires are substantially better than the existing, you may need to do some tire pressure/camber tweaks to optimize the new package.

that will be quite a bit shorter, but should fit ok. 6" would be better.

Current tires are some terribly old, dryed up, BFG touring tires with a lot of broken belts. It has some fairly fresh monroe sensatracs under it.

In reply to Gearheadotaku:

Typo, 195/60R14, about 1% shorter in terms of revs/mile, still taller than the 175/65R14 the base model got. New wheels are not in the budget currently.

Any reason you'd prefer 195 over a 185/60? If i was limited to 5.5" wheel id go for the 185.

Opens my selection up a tad, its the General Altimax HP at $70 in 185/65R14 H, or I could go with a Fuzion(these are Bridgestone and well regarded in the tire rack surveys) touring in 195/60R14 H for $59.

If I cared a bit more and could afford a set of wheels and snows, I would run actual summer tires on it for the hell of it, but I cant and thus go for a H rated grand touring with good winter performance.

I have a 93 prizm with 195/60/14 on the stock alloys. Not a problem. When I ran my 89 prelude in stock street tire class for autocross, I paid extra to get the stock 5.5 inch wide rims. The 6 inch would have been easier to get but I didn't want protest issues. I ran 195/60/14 falken azenis back then also with no problem.

For the type of car/tire/driving in question, there is absolutely no disadvantage to running any rim width within the manufacturer recommended range for the tire.

That 10 mm is not going to make much difference.
