Anyone recognize this engine? It was in a Cuna refugee boat. I was curious about the manufacturer
It looks a lot like a Ford Y-block, except those are small-block style with siamese center exhaust ports. The older Lincoln V8 (pre-MEL) is a big block though.
Aluminum block and head with pushrods looks a lot like the first BMW V8, but the oil filter is in the wrong place. Could this be a Russian copy of that?
Yeah that's Cyrillic on the oil filter housing, looks like a GAZ V8 but I can't find a wiki page. It was in a number of vehicles. Here's an article, you can see in the photos everything matches up with the picture in the OP.

I can't say why, but there is a European aire to it.
The oil filler cap looks very European.
I was thinking something like Oldsmobile, but the bellhousing pattern is unfamiliar, then I was thinking Rover, but then I saw the overabundance of head bolts/studs, and I doubt Rover would have used a single, tiny downdraught when a multitude of SUs would do. Plus the distributor's in the wrong place.
This article says a Russian truck of some sort.
I hang my head in shame, is this GRM? Almost a whole day to I.D. a V8 engine.
And my only guess was not American.
Clicking through photos I'll guess that it's a ZMZ-53 out of some flavor of GAZ truck or bus but I'm certainly willing to be proven wrong.

We lack a 1950's Soviet engine expert apparently.
Googling GAZ v8 brings up a bunch of images that appear to be the sam e engine. Aluminum oil filter canister, small carb, same thin valve covers, distributor on back of engine at a angle. Shows they came in everything include cars.
да, товарищ, приходите работать на славный завод Buick, построить много королевских и жаворонков во славу великой коммунистической автомобильной компании

I had such high hopes for this forum. I think we need to send invites to our Comrades abroad.

We can probably work out a trade agreement with him to exchange Mopar junk for eastern bloc junk.

Man, that guy is always late to the party...
I think you guys got it with the Gaz V8. Looks like the one I saw in the Csajka (Gaz 13) based on the dizzy location, water neck, and valve covers.
That one looks to have an alt instead of a gen, and it's on the wrong side
But my phone wont let me upload a photo? This is weird...
