What do you guys think would be a ball park cost to drop in a new engine into a Karmann Ghia? I understand that it'll depend on what kind of engine used but do you guys know what the range will be (assuming I am paying a VW shop to do this)? Thanks all.
Go look at www.thesamba.com and check out prices for engines there. Also, you can pick up one of those Hot VW magazines (if you can find them these days), they usually have lots of ads.
Looks like a rebuilt 1600 goes for around $700-800 or so. Installation should be pretty cheap (maybe more for a later Ghia), those engines are stupid easy to put in. Considering they will probably need to do some assembly, under a $1000 should be a good guess.
good thing is... changing engines in that car is probably easier than replacing all for rims. It's literally a couple of electrical connections, a throttle cable, and 4 bolts
I have to agree, I'd never touched an ACVW and I had the engine out in about an hour...unfortunately, it was trashed & I sold the car before ever finding another to install.
If you stay with the same gen engine, it would be a simple job.
