Cobbling together a section of pipe to replace the mid pipe on my C900 - runs from the cat back to just before the first muffler. Clamps going before the cat and before the muffler so it can be easily removed if necessary. For the connection from the cat to the new pipe (there's no flanges on the cat - I thing someone cut them off for whatever reason) and between the two pieces of new pipe, I was considering using Ultra Copper RTV, which I understand is good for exhaust. My question is: do I need a clamp in addition, or is the RTV sufficient to hold everything together by itself (once cured, of course)?

You need clamps.  If the pipes are the correct size then you don't need the RTV.

Ah, perhaps I misunderstood the usage then. I thought I had read in another thread that people were using this stuff in lieu of traditional joining methods, but I can't find the thread, and my memory may be failing me here.

I've seen it used instead of header gaskets but I don't see the bond having enough mechanical strength to substitute for clamps.

Gotcha. In the end I only used it on the one joint that wasn't perfect (new pipe to old pipe) and clamped it. It's curing now. Thanks.
