It appears that my AC compressor clutch assembly has seized (and I have the snapped serpentine belt to prove it). Is there any reason why I couldn't just buy a shorter belt and bypass the AC?

2003 F150 with the 5.4.

Looks like it would probably work if you went over top of the idler pulley on the left (if that's possible). Not sure how much the tensioner will be working in that case, but without the AC compressor as long as the belt doesn't squeal you should have enough tension.

if that doesn't work, it looks like 3 pieces to that clutch, and might be worth the time to pull it apart and see what seized... or 53.00 for a new one from Rockauto (all three pieces).

not sure if it's okay to post url's here or not, sorry if this is a no-no:

Not the first to have this thought:

Loks like the tensioner is different.

does Dorman sell an AC bypass pulley for that application? just remove the pump, bolt in the pulley, and put the stock belt back on.. probably cheaper than a belt..

$35 from Jegs. I suppose it depends on if you ever plan on fixing the compressor. Did the A/C work before the clutch went?

looking at a picture of the clutch assembly, I'd bet that's a pressable / replaceable bearing inside the pulley...

sorry, I know that's not the question, but I'm cheap and that seems like the cheapest way out for me.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I can get an AC delete pulley locally, and I may go that route. But I plan to visit the wrecking yard first to see if I can get a non AC tensioner and bypass the condenser for now. My priority is getting the truck running, and then AC. It is amazing how much I've come to rely on having a pickup in the last six months.
