Huge fan of the 818 project.
Saw a link to it on the Local Motors forum. There are a few designs floating around over there that I'd like to see here.
When Dave announced that the car will look like a Lancia Stratos in function, I grew very exited. With designs such as the Alfa 4c, and Statos, the car will be a hit.
I hope the final project will be a car to admire and not just a "bathtub with wheels on it", like a Lotus 211.
I love that most sketches and designs I saw so far feature a windshield and removable roof. This will be great coasting up and down highway 1 from San Diego to Oregon.
Dave said the car won't need to be painted. Will it be a gelcoat like the Local Motors rally fighter? Does that mean there will be custom wraps available for it? Will there be a competition for the wrap design?
Local Motors Rally fighter said:
All Rally Fighter's are vinyl wrapped, although it can remain bare. Local Motors has chosen vinyl wrap over paint for four reasons:
Vinyl is lighter weight than paint - it saves 12 pounds on the Rally Fighter
Vinyl application and disposal is less harmful to the environment than paint
Vinyl is less expensive to apply and maintain than paint
Vinyl is incredibly customizable, like paint
Our customers choose the pattern and graphics for their Rally Fighter and can engage the Local Motor's community for help with a custom 'skin' competition. Watch Ari and Dave discuss the Local Motors decision to use vinyl skins over paint.

I would hope they don't try to emulate the Rally Fighter, a truly stupid vehicle, on numerous levels.
Thanks Franze, appreciate the positive comment as I put a lot of effort into this one.

I agreed. But if that thing is making money for them, than there must be a lot of stupid people out there.

Yeah, $60k for a chopped, LS6 powered Aztek. Sign me up.
I admire what they're attempting, greatly but the results are an example of design by committee.

Oh, please. The Rally Fighter has absolutely nothing in common with an Aztek.

The rally fighter was not designed by committee. A design contest was ran, and individual designers submitted their own designs and a winner was picked. I personally don't care for it, but a lot of others must have. I bet it would be fun to go bombing through the desert though.

Yeah! the Rally Fighter doesn't even come with a tent (and I thought it was BMW Turbo Diesel powered)

Not designed by commitee? I think they called it "crowd sourcing" - even dumber!
As for its relationship to the (Pontiac) Aztek (see http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1658545_1658544_1658540,00.html), the Aztek was maybe the ugliest vehicle of modern times... until the Rally Fighter came along and displaced it.
On the other hand, one thing that Local Motors HAS done with Rally Fighter which FFR should do with the 818 is to offer a downloadable IGS file of their chassis, for independent designers to work over. That would be great, and probably sell a lot of chassis too.

Crowd sourcing is dumb? If I was working on a car project and needed a body design I could hire a pro like you and get 1, 2 maybe 3 designs. Or I could crowd source it and get hundreds maybe thousands of ideas. FFR was smart in the fact that they now own the rights to all the design submissions and can use them in any way they see fit, on the 818 or anything else. I'd say a good 5K investment. I will admit however that once a design was picked I would hire a pro to clean it up, which I believe is exactly what FFR will do.

hummm, let's see...
1,2 or 3 good designs or hundreds or thousands of mediocre ones...
Then you lose all the money you "saved" on the ideas, trying to make one of them actually work.

Do you think all of the designs submitted are mediocre?
If you think "crowd sourcing" is a bad idea, why are you participating in this thread?

I was referring to the "crowd sourcing" over at Local Motors. I don't recall FFR talking about crowd sourcing so it isn't the same, as long as they have a legitimate judging process. Some of the designs here aren't bad.
As far as participating here, I am not submitting designs here so shove it.
They may not be using the term, but it's essentially the same thing. Receiving input from the public and choosing the best one. I hate the term "crowd sourcing" but it's a useful concept.
As far as participating, I don't spend my days looking for activities I dislike and discussing them. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Their are 47 pages right now .It takes too long trying to go thru them all just to see all of the designs submitted.I would like to see a slide show of all of the different ones submitted.

Xabier, I thought your pencil design was dumb and boring.
Now that it's all together, I am just totally amazed. It's not too flashy, not too esoteric, not too retro, not too macho, not too feminine, not too American, not too Japanese, not too European, not too turkey, not too salami...
It's just right dude.
I'm now only going to follow through with my design just so I can experience the process, with absolutely zero hopes of even being recognized - but if you win, you really deserve it.
It's just a very classy, clean, and economical design. Seriously, congrats!
except for the sad face. How about a smile.
