One local place here was able to fit my old supposedly non-replaceable bushings with new Moog parts made specifically for the application on my '97 Camry lower control arms. They're doing fine ten years later.

Hm. I'll keep that in mind on future projects; the factory arms have already shipped. Thanks though!

I installed MOOG bushings in a Camry last week. It called for a ridiculous amount of time because the engine and trans mounts are in the way of getting the control arms out. The MOOG bits looked identical to the bushings I was removing with the exception of lacking failure.

German, American, Japanese, vertical-mount control arm bushings fail in EVERYTHING. Whoever decided that it is a good idea for bushings to be flexed across their axis instead of along it wasn't the brightest bulb in the bunch or didn't really care about longevity. Given that the oldest cars with this design I can think of are the A2 chassis VWs (1984/1985), that sounds about right.
