Just got a notification on the wife's 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel. Lawsuit, recall, and extended warranty. Anybody else get this, or know anything about it?

Not surprised.  This is my shocked face.

FCA got into trouble with the EPA awhile back. They had some undisclosed software that impacted emissions. For awhile, they couldn't sell any Ecodiesels. FCA made it sound more like clerical oversight or a misunderstanding of the regulations, compared to VWs outright cheating, but that could just be PR. They've agreed to pay owners up to $3k, and will reflash the vehicles to be emissions compliant. Supposedly there should be no change in vehicle performance or fuel economy after the reflash.

Oh, so it's not because they have explodey bearings?

Explodey (tm) bearings is a feature, not a bug.

We have found our customers like a choice in bearings.  Our Explodey (tm) bearings make sure our customers have a regular choice of bearings that meet their personal perferences.

Curious to know if the "no change to vehicle performance and economy" is actually true. Sounds as if I have 18 months to respond so maybe a little wait and see.

I've seen enough of these Explodey (tm) bearings in action to wonder why anyone would buy one. Also rods. Because apparently self-separating-rods are a feature too. And I like crap cars.

It’s real.  I just sold my Jeep eco diesel.  Plenty of problems or sure but no explodey bearings or spontaneously disassembling rods.  Never another FCA product for me!

In my mind the real sad thing is that the EcoDiesel Jeeps check 99% of the boxes for a midsize/near-full-size, decent economy, decent luxury diesel SUV.  Too bad they are such turds in real life.

Wish some other manufacturers would follow suit with diesel SUVs.  The X5 Diesel is/was tempting, diesel Excursions and Suburbans are too big/old, MB has a few offerings but not real truck based SUVs, Porsche and VW are cool but pretty low volume and not truck based.

I bought a 2015 Cayenne diesel.  It's rated to tow 8000 lbs and gets 30 mpg highway when not towing.  And the ride/handling is amazing!  The only thing trucks have is a low range transfer case.  These have a granny 1st gear instead.

What's missing that a Jeep would have?

I was considering a diesel X5 until my friend, who works at a BMW dealership as a service writer warned me off of them.  I bought a Cayenne Diesel, which my wife promptly took from me.  So far, so good with it.

I wish Toyota would bring over their diesel engined SUV's.  I'd love a diesel Lexus GX or Land Cruiser.

The ram 1500 ecodiesel would be great for us if it wasn't a crap engine in a crap shell.
