So the fenders on my 240z are apparently made up of fiberglass patches holding the metal together.
My two options are source a set of metal fenders or make a mold of these and make some fiberglass ones.
The car will be a street driven autocross car. Im nervous that homemade fiberglass pieces wouldnt hold up to road driving.
How big are the holes?
This sounds life a perfect excuse to buy a welder. A simple MIG setup will take care of fenders easily. Also, it doesn't need to be pretty because you will probably just grind the welds down.
Don't they make Street weight fiberglass fenders already?
I have 4 mig welders already. My roommate offered to fix them for a 6-pack so I think thats probably what will happen. I will pull molds eventually buts thats for a different topic.
How bad is the rust? Can you post a pic? Is finding a pair of good used fenders an option? How expensive are repro fenders?

Where is the rust on the fenders?
I can think of few things I would rather do less than making fiberglass fenders, or fiberglass projects of any sort.
I also don't see you making the fiberglass molds and a set of fenders for less than the cost of two good used fenders. Not to mention the hours involved.
not sure on the 240.. are they bolted on or welded on?
I can't believe nobody makes steel replacement Z fenders. Even a poor quality one could probably be worked with...
The rust is pretty much half the fender. Driver side has 3 fist sized holes and the passenger side has 2. Im hoping my buddy has a set but if noght it might be time to hit up the salvage yard.
You could always learn to weld, it's not like you can make it worse at this point.
Black Dragon has repro Z steel fenders but only for 74 and up. They aren't cheap though.
well, if you can weld, get the 74+ fenders and alter to suit your smaller bumpers

$199 each for a new fender for a 40+ year old japanese car sounds very fair to me
DatsunZfiberglass makes glass ones for about the same price.
I guess its time for rallycross then, no turning back. Good luck!
I think I have 2 rust free fenders in my attic from my 240z ITS racing days. UNFORTUNATELY IM IN JACKSON MISS...ROAD TRIP OVER JULY 4?

Yes fenders are bad.
This is exactly what I thought the thread was going to be about.

That's what I'd do. Plus some flares for wider wheels. Since, you know, you were planning on doing glasswork anyway....
My buddy came through. He has a set from a 72 that im picking up for 30$. Any suggestions on what to do with the old ones?
Make these then make molds (since you were going to do it anyway...). I'd buy a 240z just to put those on it.
