I am so working on my time machine tonight.

It was even earlier--like 1963. I was looking for an old road test yesterday.
I bet if you looked at any similar old publication you'd find similar ads.
It's cool though!
I have an old friend that had a friend who owned a "real" Shelby 427 Cobra.
During one of those gas shortages in the 70's he offered to sell it to him for something like $4-5K.
He was a kid just out of high school and while he was working full time just couldn't see how he could afford to drive it and his Pinto!
Who knew?
While not the $30 million they sell for today, $14K in 1963 was still over $112,000 in 2017 money. Not exactly pocket change...
Yeah, my grandparents built a nice and average 1700-ish sqft ranch house with a basement for $13,900 in 1959.

My dad used to work with a guy that traded his 427 Cobra for a new Corvette in 1976 and thought he made out like a bandit. He purchased it after it sat on the Ford dealer lot for 2 years because they couldn't sell it. How times have changed!
Yeah, lots of stories about Cobras being hard to sell. Funny. Yeah, really need to work on that time machine.
"Trashcan. Remember a trashcan."
And looks like you can read about that 1949 Ferrari here.
Of note is that $14000 invested in the Dow in 1963 would be close to $3 million now (with dividends reinvested) so a lot of what you’re seeing is just time passing. Obviously that doesn’t equal the gain in value on a Ferrari GTO but you also didn’t need to pay for insurance or storage or maintenance in the meantime.

To be fair, the new ones can have that tendency too.
...Just kidding...GO GRM!
Yeah, we look at those numbers now as being small, but then they were absolutely huge. $14k would have bought you a decent house in the early '60's.
Fiat Abarth Zagoto $ 3460
MGA Twin Cam $ 3345
Ford Taurus 17 M $2017
Ferrari 212 Coupe $12000 0-60 8.2 sec max speed- 128 mph.
above taken fom a 1958 Road & Track
I wonder what happened to that 250. It has a rather unique paint scheme, and I don't recall seeing one like it before.
Looking at the ad again, it's amusing how a Buick dealer also sold Ferraris. It appears this car belonged to the dealership owner.

Yeah, that paint job didn't look familiar to me, either, so I did some searching. It's now the navy one.
