Coming back for another bout.. the undefeated champion.. the Fiat 128!
The new Competitor, Hailing from Europe before coming to the US.. the Chevette. Marketed as a Vauxhall, Opel Kadett, Isuzu Gemini, and Holden Gemini before coming to the US as the Chevy Chevette and Pontiac T1000
Availible as a 2 and 4 door sedan and a 3 door hatchback and a 3 door Estate, the chevette came with engines ranging from a 1.4 to a 1.6, 1.8 Diesel, and a 2.3 Twin cam in the HS. While it was not groundbreaking, it was unique as one of the last rear wheel drive subcompacts.
The HS is eligible in this fight
FIGHT!
As much as I have been digging the Fiats lately.....
I say otherwise.

sorry, even with racing livery and fender flares, the Chevette still is a horribly ugly car...
128
A no brainer to my simple little mind. FIAT!
chevette!
much easier to LSX
and you get to tell people you drive a 'vette'
If I could get the Chevette pictured with a decent reliable engine I'd go with it.
128, I like the looks of the Chevette HS and it's kinda hard to argue with the success it had in rallying, but that 128 just looks right to me
I shouldn't have looked.

Chevette?
No damn way. I had to drive one of those things for a while. Never again. I vote Fiat
The Chevette makes a much bettor donor for a locost; since I don't particularly want either, I'd have a Chevette to cut up and from which I'd repurpose parts.

Well MM, you found another tough one...
I'll go with the Fiat again...
Fiat for sure. If it had to be a Chevette variation though, I'd pick the one you missed, the isuzu I-mark.
I've driven both. The 128 is nimble and fun. The Chevette is just....horrible. Advantage, Fiat.
I vote chevette with a Solstice drivetrain. Or my best friend in high school's '79 2-door with his dad's 2.8LV6-5spd from an S10 that was wrapped around a tree.
Chevette, of course. What's not to love?
This car is a really funny story. He won a track championship with it in 96, and was building a new, much better car in 97, but can't bring himself to retire this one. The two of us got tangled up at speed in 98 or 99, and both rolled really badly. It wasn't the first, or last time it went over.
It was a retired delivery car, and already had 400,000 km when he built it, and he's still racing it. The stuff I could tell you about this car would make most of you (safety nuts) cringe.
I owned an 87 Chevette and commuted 200 km/day with it for 4 years. Never had a single problem with it.
my turn for a chevette story. my grandpa had a diesel one. it got totalled by another diesel chevette.

just what are the chances of that happening?
Sadly, the US never got good version of the Chevette, I guess it was because GM wanted us to buy the more upmarket cars
pretty much... GM wanted to sell people the biggest car they could get them into.. more mark up on a citation or even a malibou than a chevette
I love old Fiats (my second car was a 124), but I'll go for the Chevette. Sub 2,000 lbs., rwd, practical hatchback body, too cheap to be stolen, simple and reliable, cheap parts, so slow you have to drive it like you stole it to get anywhere, but torquey enough to keep on a boil when you row the gears with gusto, and quite fun when you do. What's not to like? I've always loved them. Never drove one with an auto transmission though; I expect those suck.
I am one of those proud few who see a Chevette and think, "Nice car."
The Fiat got bloodied this time.. but is still the winner.. Tune in next time for the next Versus thread!
