In reply to Tom1200 :
Pete's is half that.
For me Definitely would be these 3 cars
1. A cleaner body 96-00 Acura Integra with R front end to convert all my Integra parts to along with my k20 swap.
2. 1970 -1972 Datsun 510 that's relatively solid body-wise, it doesn't have to be finished.
3. A 1980 AMC Eagle Id make it run be like an off-road, streetcar, but a tow rig also. Not sure lol
I make it so I could buy more tools though for sure at least some fabrication or used milling machine at least be.. $25000 3 cars I could do it though. I was stuck between the AMC eagle or an old Merkur XR4TI with 2.3 turbo
About 2017 to 2020 I had a pretty good driveway.
Two Infiniti Q45s. The white , near pristine w/ 69k miles but hail damage. The 10 place finisher of $2015 Challenge. Drove it 1,000 to The Challenge, beat on it for a full day and then drove it home 1,000 miles. No breakage! Also competed in Roadkill Zip Tie Drags making it 3 rounds out of 5.
The green was rough but bought with a 5 speed manual trans and 3rd pedal. Dragged and autox'ed many times. Would have been my 2018 Challenger but family matter kept me away.
I had $4000 into the 2 cars, total.
The Sumo Wrestler, the 2001 Montero. Road ready, I had $2000 into this truck. Just 2 weeks after buying it, we took it on a week long family vacation to N. Michigan for over 1,000 round trip miles that included two days of Michigan Off Road Routes. No failures.
The Gov't Mule 2006 Ford F-250 for doing truck things. Lets say $3,000 to get it on the road.
Shown above towing P4, the 4th Prius I've bought. High miles at 188k but extensive dealer service history including the PO buying 4 tires at the dealership. All, in, going down the road for $1,019. I still have it, now w/203k miles
Recap:
V8 sedan stuff for drag and autox with room for kids in the back.
4X4 stuff
Truck stuff
44 mpg stuff
Grand total: $10,019
Oh yeah...
Convertible stuff: I also have a 1990 Miata that I bought in 1993 for $10,500. It now has just 101k miles.
Luckily, I have an odd driveway that can park 8 cars and none are blocked in by one another.
Then, during all this, my wife has always had a minivan of some sort.
An early 2000's vintage Land Cruiser or LX470, a similar vintage Lexus LS430, and a Yamaha Vmax to round things out.
Okay I can play too.
1). 2000 Porsche Boxster S. I paid $9900.
2). 2002 Subaru RS rallycross car. I paid $4k.
3). 1996 Camaro SS bought for CAM autoX, HPDE and maybe drag racing fun. I paid $3500 but it needs a lot of TLC.
If I could find the right cars and use the full budget, 2) might be a WRX or a GC RS and 3) would be a 98-02 LS powered SS.
Nice Mk1 Rabbit and a nice NA or NB Miata. 3rd car? I don't know right now, but a Mirage stick is kind of intriguing...
This is the Honda fan boy in me can handle it answer.
1: 2007/2008 Honda Fit nicest I can find (k20 swap would be awesome) ~ 8-10k max
2: My beloved and very ridden hard 1989 Civic Si, It's not even worth 3k
3: The nicest first generation Ridgeline I can find with AWD and a tow hitch that fits in the budget
I am boring and predictable. Damn
Or The might as well light some of the money on fire option.
1: A Porsche 911 of some sort. 15k (real basket case no doubt in this price bracket)
2: Still with my beloved 1989 Civic Si (really attached to that car) 3k
3: What ever Ridgeline/Pilot/CRV I can still afford with the remaining budget. (I kinda need a family size car and AWD is a plus in the snow) 6k
My dream garage at $25k has either 4 vehicles, or else for 3 vehicles my dream garage costs a lot more.
Best I can do for $25k and 3 cars:
$25k and 4 vehicles:
3 vehicles, "reasonable but more than $25k budget"
Umm...
Can i use the 25k for a bigger garage instead? Cause i already have a pretty awesome trio of cars....
The dream garage of mine to add would be:
1996-1999 neon acr sedan in black
Track t kit car with gm 60*v6
Bagged service body 1ton truck
Easy:
1980 Chevy Luv Pickup 4WD - The Truck
1978 Porsche 924 - The Sports Car
1988 Mercedes Benz 190E - The Cruising Car
I think I could do that for 25K...
BG chassis 323 with a BP swap, GTR turbo bits, COP conversion, Jim Pierce front and rear subframes and arms, GC coilovers, E85 conversion and PAR gearbox and limited slip
Volvo 240, 16v head swap, quaiffe steering rack quickener, 4.84 rear end, limited slip, JVAB suspenders.
Manual AWD Element with a 6th gear swap from a TSX.
1) Mazda FD track car w/ LS1 & T-56 trans -$20k
2) Formula Ford w/ twin cam 1.6 L - $11k
3) MB W123 240D 4spd stick - $4k
Lest we think this is outside of the $35 budget, I've seen these cars transact at these values in the past 120 days; FD local to me and the others on online auctions this crowd commonly uses!
Ooops...typical in my life, I budget poorly. It's $25k, not $35k.
So the Mazda FD stays on the list. But this time it's a high mileage stock rotary @ $15. I bought one 2 years ago.
Lotus Seven S4 @ $6k
MB W123 240D 4spd stick @ $4k
Same transaction criteria.
- First Gen (2008-2009) Mazdaspeed 3
- Early 5th Gen (2005-) Mustang GT
- Whatever Sequoia or other suitable
tow vehicle I can get with the leftover.
25K is not going to buy anybody's "dream" car. But, I'll play:
5.0 Mustang notch
'66 Chevy C10 shortbed big window cab
late model Crown Vic ex cop car
In reply to Colin Wood :
mk1 Ford Capri - want to do an RS 3100 style build with a Mustang 3.7 / 6-speed drivetrain
NC MX-5 for EV conversion
80's El Camino for the Challenge
This is honestly why I'm trying to find the right house to buy. These three cars + a motorcycle or two.
I'm happy with my Fit. I'd pay it off, get a set of winter wheels/tires and get a 4x6 utility trailer. Hell, I need a new garage and fence more than I need another car.
barefootskater (Shaun) said:2: barn-door big-block 'Burban. Betting $7000 buys the nicest one there is, so the work pig I'd buy should be roughly $4k.
Sadly, not even close on the 7 grand. However a work pig you'd be ok with could be found no prob for your 4K
I can find an old Ford wagon for half that budget. The true dream wagon would tie up most of it.
The cheapest $100 project I can get, just to meet the three car min.
Whatever is left, goes into parts for my 48 F6 COE Technically, that's not buying three cars, so the third decision would depend on how much the wagon costs.
1. 986 Boxster
2. Isuzu Vehicross (or maybe a Cayenne or Touraeg)
3. An interesting pre 1975 car, maybe a first gen Barracuda. I have seen those for $3500 in repairable project condition.
"Totally hypothetical question here guys, build a dream garage from $25k"
GRM hive: What do you think we do for a living?
This is a game I play with myself a lot. My "dream garage" is modest and probably wouldn't even crack 25k, but I suppose with that budget I could buy the nicest example of each of the following and have enough left over to set them up exactly how I wanted.
1.) Finish the Saab. I can't imagine this would be more than 4k to strip and reupholster the interior, respray the exterior, and fix some of the wonky body panels.
2.) NB Miata. I've never owned a Miata, but it's on the list. Seems like NB2s are creeping up lately, but you can still get a good one for about 6k.
3.) GMT800 for a tow pig/ camping rig. I don't particularly like the SUV driving experience, but with Ms. Raab itching for a teardrop and our access to land in Montana, it feels like a necessary evil. The GMT800 seems like a good candidate. I've driven a few in my time as a medic in a chase car and they're fine. I'd also be more than happy to sub any early/mid 2000s rust-free SUV (Sequoia, Expedition, etc.)
