Daughter number I was open to a Miata.  Looked at a couple, but they came way worse than advertised.  Buying a Miata mid summer is not the ideal situation.  Searching CL has turned up two nice BMWs and still a bunch of Saabs.  Found a real nice silver blue Solara in the price range as well.  Flat out with work, so I can't even call or go look at anything at the moment.  A buddy of mine just scooped up a 2003 Cooper S for short money because the engine wouldn't turn over.  Ended up being a combo of a bad battery and a seized alternator.  That might be a decent car for her, but she'll have to go without a convertible.  At least there is always the TR8 option if she wants the convertible with no back seat, but that is a really nice car to turn loose to a teenager.

I'm gonna throw in another vote for a 9-3. Some parts can be a bit tricky to source, but they're great cars that are both safe and roomy.

What exactly is a viggen?  $2200 for a black convertible Viggen.

Man I don't know about the rest of you but I find the looks of the Solara convertible very, very fugly. My daughter #1 has owned a Mini Cooper and it was a repair/maintenance nightmare. I don't have a suggestion that meets your #2's criteria. What I can tell you after having done this with 3 daughters is that they never think about this while shopping for a car, but reliability ends up being a MAJOR element of the equation to them after they (or a friend) has experienced a break down out in the wild... that ends up having a profound effect on their attitude going forward.

How cheap is the sc430? Hideous on the outside, Lexus on the inside.

I believe the Viggen is Saab's top of the line model. Like the Polestar is to Volvo.

(Polestar is such a terrific "lost in translation" name.. makes me chuckle like Beavis and Butthead)
