"1" was great, saw it last year out in Austin, Tx during F1 week. It was a post production unedited showing with Jackie Stewart in person, giving a talk about the film before hand. I'm going to the opening of "Rush" in a few weeks, taking the ex-James Hunt M23 #11 car to display and attending a little pre-opening reception....can't wait. And in case anyone is around the Glen in 2 weeks, I think we may have it there too.
update on the Glen..no Mclaren but Ferrari 312PB, 917, PTG E46,and E36 and the Lola..in the garage area...stop by say hello...
Can't wait for Rush. I saw the final version of "1" and I would say the footage was great, but the story wasn't terribly cohesive. Most of the end of the movie moves towards the safety improvements made over time, and the movie does circle back and address the intro. This is not to say I didn't enjoy it, I did, but I was hoping for another "instant classic" like Senna, and it didn't deliver. I am pretty sure "1" will be available on Oct 1 on iTunes.
My guess for the direction of "1" was that they unfortunately tried to follow too much of the history of F1 and cram it into a regular length film, which meant nothing got a full treatment. There are so many great stories from the history of the spot, but they are barely touched on in the interest of scope. I like the idea of RUSH focusing on 1 season, even though the prelude (mostly James Hunt's story) and the epilogue (Niki Lauda's story) are hugely interesting as well.
I would definitely recommend "1" to people who love cars/racing/etc., but it's not much of a mainstream effort.
