Not sure what to do. The GF's 2003 Vibe/Matrix 5-speed trans just ate a bearing(common problem on the C59s), drained fluid with lots of metal glitter in it. Makes horrible grinding, pops out of reverse when letting clutch out etc etc.

Just put $2000.00 into it for rotors, calipers, pads, clutch, rear main seal. Found a used trans for $250 + $600 labor for removal and install. Still needs struts, A/C compressor, rear brakes(drums). has 180k on it, toyota engine will run forever...

Do we fix it or get another car or get another Vibe/Matrix with working A/C and an automatic and swap the brake stuff over? What says the hive? Budget for new ride 2000-3000

You'll take an $850 bath selling a car with a dead transmission. Fix it and drive it until something else big breaks.

I'd replace the transaxle myself and save the $600 towards repairing the A/C (likely just needs new seals in the compressor and a recharge) and other issues.

KYB occasionally runs rebates on struts, which when combined with RockAuto 5% discount makes them pretty reasonable and they are stupid easy to change. Toss a pair of rear shoes in the order and get it all done at once.
