I run an 87 rx7 na in chump. It is probably time to flush the cooling system.

The block is iron and aluminum. The rad is aluminum.

How should I do it and what should I use? I don't want to hurt the water jackets!

Also, can somebody recommend me accurate and budget friendly temp gauges? 1 for oil, 1 for water temp.

Thanks!

I'm a fan of the VDO Vision Black gauges. They look good, they're not overly expensive and they seem to be good quality. I've got them in the Jeep for oil pressure, oil temp and trans temp.

You can drain the radiator and the block has a drain on the driver's side, at the bottom of the center housing. I just used to drain them, fill them up with distilled water, run it for a bit, then drain them again. Depending on how gunked up they were, I might repeat this a few times. I never used any of the flushing fluids. Distilled water is a pretty good solvent, but I never had a really neglected engine before, nor did I race them.

I never raced my N/A 1987 at anything more than autocross but the temperature was pretty happy on a typical 50/50 distilled water/Prestone mix. Of course I would run more water in your application. Racing Beat has some good info on optimizing your cooling system.
