Road Trip!

But not an especially epic one...

I'm flying to Florida this week to retrieve, among other things, my father's Ford Flex and some furniture.  He's not necessarily moving out of Florida for good, but he will be heading up to Connecticut for a while.

My brother and I will be renting the biggest closed trailer that U-Haul will let us tow and pointing it north. Time is going to be a big factor. We need to get Dad's new place set up quickly, as he will be flying up a few days later, so shenanigans will be kept to a minimum. This trip will be all business.

My brother and I have survived this trip once before, back in 1973. He was fifteen and I was six. My father had just inked a deal on a brand new Plymouth Fury with the 360 and a four barrel, and as soon as he set the pen down, the gas crisis hit. Nevertheless, my parents were determined to visit my godfather in Fort Lauderdale, and we kept on going until we got to the Everglades. It was a great trip, in spite of the vinyl seats (in July), massive wildfires on both sides of I-95 for what seemed like hours, and the fact that my parents ran out of gas money on the way home. Getting a cash advance from a credit card wasn't an easy deal back then, and I remember having to go to a bank and sign a bunch of papers.

Anyway, the two of us survived that trip without killing each other, and somehow managed to avoid traveling together for the next 44 years.

I've only driven the Flex a few times, and I don't remember it being anything special, in spite of the 20 inch black wheels of the Hooligan Package. No, it does not have the EcoBoost engine. I had my sister send a photo of the VIN and I ran it through a Ford dealer's parts guy to confirm that it came from the factory with the Class III towing package so, at least officially, it should be capable of hauling 4,500 pounds. My father has used it to tow his 24 foot Chapparal, but never over any huge distance. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

So if you happen to be traveling along the east coast later this week and you see two cranky guys staring at the flat tire on a red and black Ford Flex with U-Haul behind it, feel free to honk and laugh at us as you drive by.

I packed a couple of GRM stickers and I promise to put one on the Flex and the other on the trailer. I'm pretty sure that we will be the only ones on the road sporting that combo.

And I will be slowing down a bit once we cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge to push my brother out somewhere near his house. I get to do the last four hours on my own.

Wish me luck.laugh

Just be aware that Uhaul has its own calculations for tow capacity that don't care what Ford says, Uhaul doesn't actually have to have the trailer you reserved anywhere close to where you reserved it from, and Uhaul will rent you a broken trailer or truck without any remorse.

Edit: Good Luck. laugh

In reply to MrJoshua :

I rented a trailer Saturday night online for use Sunday. UHaul didn’t show it stock at my neighborhood minimart, but they did have it at a place close to our first pickup point, who also happened to be open all day Sunday. I got a call about 29 minutes after I’d reserved it saying that location didn’t have the trailer, but the corporate UHaul place did. Unfortunate it was 20-minutes the wrong direction & didn’t open until 9am, but at least they called & everything worked out ok.

So Woody, I think I’d call the number on the UHaul website & talk to a real person to do the reservation.

Woody, you might want to call Budget or Penske.

Rental trailers are usually pretty heavy, why not renting a large van or small truck?  1.  you have a back up vehicle to chase parts, food etc. in case of a breakdown, and 2. your brother is in another vehicle.

In reply to 914Driver :

That was my original plan, but my brother wants to go with a trailer. He's handling the rental arrangements, so I will concede that point to him. We can adjust the plan as necessary based on size and availability. I see myself more as the getaway driver in this movie, rather than the mastermind.

You might look for the grm on the road assist list before you need it, and I have been a AAA member for 10 years well worth the $100 a year I pay for it in my opinion.

I have AAA, but I’ll have to seek out the GRM on the road assist list.

My brother “reserved”  a 6x12 trailer. Hopefully it will be there, though I think it will be too small anyway. In true GRM spirit, we skipped the extra $70 for the insurance.

Pulling a 6X12 full of furniture with a Flex?   I'll copy this thread to ALL GRMers.

any chance you can score one of those rooftop cargo carriers and adapters for the flex?  that could add a considerable amount of space to the top. might be able to sell it when you get to CT

Not without adding $300 of crossbars and brackets to the factory rack.

When you take a shower in Florida in the summertime, there is no cold water. I kept turning the water down and down, but 85 degrees is as cold as it gets.

Welcome to July in FL! Stay inside at all cost.

When do you head North? Time for a beer with local GRM’rs?

Yeah shut the hot water heater off till October. Also do your self a favor and stay off I4 unless your leaving after 7pm, it' a rat race to I95. I'll usually take I75 to 301 north of Ocala which drops you in Jacksonville. Good luck, I'm also in St Pete if you need help.

My daughter in law and three girlfriends are staying at St. Pete Beach if you have too many cars for two guys to drive.

If your family gets on your nerves, stop and see mine; three are~32ish, single & financially secure.

I appreciate the offers of roadside assistance, beers with friends, and female companionship, but unfortunately, there will be no time for cavorting on this trip.

My sister from New Hampshire, another from Tahoe, my brother from Philly and I converged on St. Pete last night and spent a very long, very, very hot day cramming most of the contents of my father's house into an enclosed U-Haul trailer, which as of today, I have dubbed The Hurt Locker. His new digs are a little smaller, so some stuff had to stay behind. There was a little extra space in the trailer though, so I was able to drag home a couple of interesting little projects that I will never have time for, but I will give more details on once I get home. The plan is to set the alarm for 5 am and hit the road ASAP.

LOL!

Remember that phone call that I had to take when you and I were standing in the parking lot next to my dog? That was the moment everything changed, and the end result turned out to be this little adventure. I can't wait to be home again.
