I'm at Mid Ohio, HPDE in the tech shed. A guy rolled in with a Flying Miata turbo with the downpipe pulled apart from the turbo. Gasket blew out and a stud is broken. What does that gasket cross reference to? What size are the studs? We're going to try to get parts at Autozone or something and get him on track by the end of the day.

Turns out the wastegate linkage is missing too. Anybody have an idea about that?

No gasket. Metal to metal. If you put one there, it will blow out.

Studs are 8x1.25x30, I think. I don't have an OE cross reference. It's odd that the ones on the outlet are the problem, usually it's the turbo to manifold. If you do use random studs, I'd recommend replacing them with ss at least and ideally Inconel.

The wastegate linkage looks normal to me.

Thanks for the quick response. There was a little bit of what was left of a gasket, that previously blew out. We'll try to get new studs and some kind of locking nuts. We found the Wastegate linkage is missing the clip that holds the rod on. Rod popped off and it was sitting under the linkage, but still in line.

The driver bought the car with the turbo kit already installed. Good news is it just stopped raining, so he wasn't missing much here at Mid-O anyway.

I have used safety wire in the past after losing that clip.

People keep thinking that a gasket is a good idea there, and the gaskets always fail :)

Safety wire is a good option. If the linkage comes apart, you hopefully will just start dumping boost. The bad failure is when it comes apart and the wastegate flapper cannot move. If the owner sees a big spike in boost, get out of the throttle immediately! A good ECU should have a boost cut set up, but just in case...

I'll pass on the knowledge. The Wastegate moved very freely, but I'll let him know to watch out if boost runs away.

That's a good general rule when dealing with turbo cars - if you get a big increase in power, the correct response is not "oh cool!" ;)
