Is the transmission and transfer case out of a 1996 Bronco the same as the one in the 1992 F-150 I'm buying? I have a line on a working and cheap trans/transfer combination nearby, and I'm going to go and pull it if it is the unit I need.
The owner is not an expert, but he says the transfer case is manual shift (looking good so far) and that maybe the wiring harness connectors are a bit different, but if that is all, that is just a re-pin away from working for me.
Thanks in advance!
I THINK they are close enough to being the same. About the only difference I remember is possibly the MLPS, and if it is, just unbolt and put yours on.
Internally, there are a bunch of updates, but externally, they are the same.
Near as I know, all the 1/2-ton transfercases from '80-'96 are the same.
I've heard that AODEs were also used in F-series; supposedly you can tell which tranny is in the truck by where the O/D defeat is; E4ODs have a button on the end of the shift lever, AODEs have it somewhere else, I think in the shift pattern (i.e. P-R-N-OD-D-2-L).
So far all I've ever seen are trucks with E4ODs, though.
Inside door panel of the F150 has a sticker which list what transmission is in the vehicle. I assume the Bronco has the same sticker. The E40D will be listed as "E" on the sticker.
I think the plug changed in 1995.
I don't know enough to be able to help with if the internals are different.
I believe there were some improvments in the E4OD in 95 or 96. More better reliability was the result but I cannot recall which improvemnets they were. A quick search will tell you.

Great replies, thank you.
I figure if they are close enough, I'll make it work. For $250 for a transmission and transfer case, I can turn around and probably sell it for a profit if I can't so no worries.
