aah according to wikipedia the escort does weigh about 400 pounds less. For autocross that would be hard to argue with.
Really, for anything. A KLZE swapped 2nd gen Escort will easily run in the mid to low 13s in the quarter mile. KLDE mid/high 13s. Not bad for a stock motor. I don't think the 3rd gen Escorts are much heavier.
Big difference in tossability, too. The Escorts are REALLY nimble, but give up some stability feel to the Probe.
Kindof like Civic hatch vs. Celica.

im guessing he means after some suspension work?

I guess by nimble i meant the light and tossable feeling. I haven't hooned a 3rd gen, but the 2nd gen EGT wasn't too bad stock. The LXs are horrible, let down big time by lack of sway bar and tire.
The EGT didn't handle much worse than the Celica did stock, but it was an entirely different animal. Felt light, more like a toy. The Celica was planted and heavier feeling, not just in weight but in driving inputs as well, but did the same things just as fast with way less drama.
But yeah... the EGT doesn't have stock suspension anymore, and it's a hoot.
But if you've only driven LXs, then i'm sure i sound like a moron.

Im kidding, I love my escorts. But yeah, Ive spent all my time in LX Escorts. Hundreds and hundreds and hund....
...Too many to count.
They are fun to drive, they just dont seem all that nimble after driving the Miatas...

I know what you meant. You need a GT. Just get one. You'll thank me later. I've never had another sub $1000 car give me so many giggles. (The huge split in the muffler and the flames it spews probably has a lot to do with it.)

I wouldn't kick a gt out of my bed for eating crackers, but I love my wagons. And short of a swap, there are no BP powered wagons. And if I were to swap anything, it would be KL. Plus, Ive got all the B series Mazda goodness wrapped up in my two Miatas, and the parts car.
Joey
There's a lot of those swaps running around, actually... Just keep your eye out.
But a KL wagon would be sex. I would ditch my MX6 for one with no second thoughts.
I'm kindof wanting another Escort to put an F2T or FE3 turbo in instead of keeping this MX6 around.
I've got a really clean 94 wagon 5 speed that's waiting for a cheap (free) kl to show up.

F2T it. You KNOW you want to. Although John says he managed to blow a few of those up. I can't imagine what he could have possibly done to them.......

That is a 100% stock high mileage OEM longblock. 468wtq could be fun in an Escort Wagon, yes?
Hell Joel even blew one up come to think of it!
Holy crap... how the hell are you guys doing that? I swear everyone i see on those forums has like 300,000 miles, stock original clutch, boosting 17psi on stock turbo or tbird hybrid, making well over 300wtq, on stock unopened original motors.
Nobody builds these for a reason. IF they blow one up (bad tuning or lack of oil), they just go to the junkyard, grab another one and dump it in. I haven't seen any reports of anyone killing one in terms of just plain making too much power for the rods or pistons or anything.
I read a thread where some guy put one of those variable vane semi truck turbos on an F2T as a joke before he swapped in his FE3, expecting it to die. He actually tuned for it, ended up at 25psi before he became impatient. Still wouldn't blow up. He ended up spraying a 200 shot on top of it, and it still made it up and down his road 5-6 times. It even still ran, it just detonated from the nitrous.
How did they die?
All my local Honda buddies are telling me that i should invest in a built block this spring for "when my motor gives out." Screw that, i'm going to megasquirt this thing and install a T70 with some firehose sized injectors.
Joels was not a turbo car to be fair. My silver 90k turbo Probe took a 50 shot of nitrous (ZEX kit) for 1 second too long (approximately three seconds and BURRRRDDDdddddudududududu...POP) The Black car had 200k on it and overheated and over a thirty second period nuked the block. I would be surprised if there was any coolant or oil in the car at the time though.

Ah ok... Mine's just been trucking along on stock ECU with no complaints. It's the strangest feeling 4-cylinder i've ever driven though. Idles like it has a gigantic cam. THUP TH THUP THUP THUP TH TH THUP THUP TH THUP TH THUP. And it's one of the scarier 4-cylinder motors i've experienced. I've driven much faster, but none had that gut-wrenching out of control feeling like this. I've got 172k on mine with a stock clutch, and it grabs like a motherberkeleyer.
Do you have a link to an F-series swapped escort anywhere? I've seen BP, and KL swapped small fords and mazdas but I can't recall and F2T or FE powered cars. More difficult to swap I assume?

Not necessarily more difficult than a KL swap, just different and not quite as traveled. I don't have any info on an ESCORT, but if you go to www.clubprotege.com and search "FE3" there's a couple running around there. Anywhere you can stick an FE3, you can fit an F2T. There's enough space, they use the same family of transmissions, (though i wouldn't advise putting an F2T on a G-series transmission), and i think most of the mounts line up.
Well... because unless you're really bored and/or interested, and because there's a lot to sort through over there, here's the basic rundown:
If you already have a BP-powered car, the FE3 literally BOLTS IN. Wiring is up to you, that's far outside my comfort zone, i have no idea what would be needed. (I would just megasquirt it) You want an 88-92 MX6/Probe non-turbo transmission if you're going to stay n/a, and you'll probably want an 88-92 MX6/Probe TURBO transmission if you want to boost it (or if you're dumping in an F2T). The Turbo transmission (h-series) will require a slight reworking of the crossmember and shift linkages.
I'm not 100% sure what to do about axles, but there was a variant of the G-series transmission that came with BP powered cars, so i imagine a cheap plugnplay solution could be found pretty easily.
EDIT:
ALright, found the thread i was looking for.

I think he makes it look more complicated than it is, but it'll give you a good idea of what's going on.

Fords idea was to develop aftermarket parts that could be installed on any ZX2. The SR was to demonstrate that.
One thing they forgot was a bigger rear sway bar, keeping the wimpy 13mm bar. A 19mm bar or larger makes a huge difference. They are available off other Escort models.
Figured I'd bring up an old one. My rear sway keeps loosening itself. Maybe I should just use some bolt lock on it but that would be too easy. I'm thinking of pulling a sway bar off another escort and putting performance bushings on it. Are the performance bushings worth it and does anyone know what models have the larger sway bar?
Wagon or EGT should be bigger.
I believe there's another rear bar from another car you can adapt, but i honestly forget what it was. (Contour? That might have been probe/mx6 trick)
Poly bushings are worth it, also pair with some AWR endlinks.
In reply to N Sperlo:
I have one of the good ones I could ship you though you could probably source one plenty cheap locally. I forget if it's the 19 or 21 mm but I can check if you're interested.
I always paired mine with an engergy suspension end link kit from jegs. They come with a nylock nut to keep them from loosening. You can get poly bushings for the bar mounts their too and put them in the escort brackets.

Could you ship me your drivers side door too? It already matches. Mine was apparently vandalized before I bought it, but I believe it may have been fraud.
We will be in touch, Sir.
