I feel a little bad for the operations guy from McLaren. Kind of hard to gracefully exit that conversation.

So, standing restart....Vettel is on "softs".....not sure what the other cars are on......does Vettel get a better drag start down to the first turn?
Edit: They just said Vettel is the only top 8 car on brand new softs.

Pretty dramatic mistake by Lewis- had a ripping start, and then that.
I have to give Seb credit for his drive today. Very nice job.
Lewis was going for it, I guess.
Edit: Brake warmup setting locked on instead of off by Lewis. Oopsie.
It never occurred to me that Max wouldn't win today.
Perez ran an error free race. Really good performance through the whole day.
Perez just totally justified everything positives about himself and negative about Max's previous teammates. He has RB in the constructor's hunt for the first time in years and won in his sixth race driving error free.
Max caught a lucky break with Hamilton's rare mistake.
Bottas was nowhere. How much longer until Merc pull Russell up for his seat?
Gasley is so good in AT.
Never thought I'd be happy for Vettel on podium, but he earned it today.
Iceman scores a point!
I agree on I didn't think I would be happy to see Vettel on the podium. I was really turned off by AM dumping Perez so I was not rooting for Seb to do well. I guess having Checo win it with Seb behind seemed to me like everyone wins.
That was a pretty thrilling race. I just can't believe Lewis made a mistake like not having the setting correct. This may be the race we look back on at the end of the championship and say that's where it all changed.
If not for the slow pit stop Perez may have come out in the lead early on in the race. He got it back with the pirelli berkeley up. Sad for Max, he was excellent all day. Lewis did get unlucky with the pit stop release. The championship stays interesting! RB has the lineup to compete for WCC. Loved the top 5 and top 10 really. Lando and Carlos recovered to finish well. Pierre is really maturing into a very good midfielder.
Really illustrates how luck plays a part in Championships. So many drivers had good luck and others had bad luck, and then some had both in the same race.

I thought last race was when it all changed :) Can we get a ruling on this please?
I think Lewis' error here underlines just how demanding this sport is. After 49 laps at race pace around a circuit that allows no errors at all, these guys are drained and managing a ground-based spacecraft. Even the best in the world will start to bend.
Great friggin' race, though the exploding Pirellis that made it fun are not such a great thing. I do hope "Old Vettel" is back, he makes the sport much more fun. Awesome and well-earned win for Checo.
Lewis may have made a mistake at the end, but the fact that he was even there contending for the win shows just how amazing he is. That car did NOT have the pace of the Red Bulls, the fact that he spent the day fighting with him is all him.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
Maybe it was Monaco but leaving Monaco it was a dead heat (points wise) and if LH had just held second he would have taken a good lead back. Hard to say for another 17 races or so...

Calling all F1 mensa's.....Keith T...alfaD.....looseC....Javelin,etc..... what exactly did I witness on the restart with LH's Merc ......in layman terms? I remember back when extended times on the grid waiting for the back markers would give the front runners fits before the flag was dropped (overheating).....is this the same thing?

The Mercedes no longer can use DAS to heat up front tires on restarts so they have a system where the driver flips a switch and the rear brakes are essentially turned off for the warm up lap, which puts extra heat in front brakes and tires. Notice that Lewis' front brakes were smoking while he was sitting there at the restart. Sadly for him, either he forget to turn the switch back on or he accidently flipped it off after he launched because at turn one he hit the brake pedal and only the fronts were working
Thanks you two...KT/LC, so here is where I show my ignorance... how long has this been in existence?
Keith Tanner said:I suspect it's been around for some time in one form or another but we've never been aware of it.
Seeing how hot they get the brakes for a start or restart, yea- just nobody mentioned it. DAS really didn't do anything for the brakes....
Maybe it was just our view, but with the smoke coming from the front of Lewis' car, that sure looked to be a reminder to turn that off.

Mark, where did you find this info?
I presume, based on nothing other than having a rough idea of how stuff works, that they just shut off the regen on the rear wheels once they have full charge in the batteries, and rely on the friction brakes to make heat.
Forget to go back to normal, and the fronts lock up and you slide out on turn one.
