Based on improvements over practice - I have to think that will benefit Mercedes. They seem to make the most progress with time.
Silverstone is also a track that Mercedes has traditionally been strong at. This is a race that they need to do well at if they're going to have a chance to fight for the championships in the last half of the season.

This has been bothering me all season.... Am I the only one who has a hard time telling the Alpine and the Williams from each other? And same story with the Merc and the Aston Martin?
I definitely have trouble with the Mercedes and AM. Haven't had any problems with Alpine that I've noticed, but maybe I just haven't noticed.
HAMILTON!!! in the prequalifying thing whatever that was. Should be fun tomorrow.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
I thought I was the only one, that AM green really looks black at certain angles, and the cars do look similiar.

Interesting - so more bites at the apple to get to the optimal race setup. Not sure if that balances the playing field or let's the leaders get ahead.
Actually less... they go under parc ferme rules twice. The first time is directly after the 1st practice.
George berkeleying Russel!!

I thought that was a fantastic quali session. The Russel lap was moving to see one of the young pups so adored.
Lewis! Impressed again by his ability to find pace. That second Q3 lap was going to be nice. But his first lap was enough.
Norris and Ricciardo are sneakily close to the front. I expect them to be in the fight.
Ferrari still seem to be highly unpredictable.
I don't think Russel will get points in the sprint but may have a good chance on Sunday.
Very curious to see how the teams use FP2.
Fun. Lewis genuinely treasures the competition, I believe.
Or, he is the best actor in the world.
Lights go out for the Sprint race at 11:30 am est for anyone wondering. Cars are rolling onto the grid now.
It's nice to hear the crowds this weekend, hearing the cheer as George sent it yesterday in qualy was great. I didn't think I'd miss that but I did, crowds of Orange with smoke bombs not so much lol.

Did I miss the memo regarding this sprint format for this event or was it mentioned earlier in the season?
Good race that wasn't a race. Red bull first and last, Alonso making all kinds of moves, George staying in top ten!
If next years car delivers on its promises this format could be fun. I still feel like traditional qualifying has its place though and that ability to get everything out of just a few laps is pretty cool to see for the more seasoned fans.

I dig the sprint format. Not a clue about strategic implications of vehicle wear etc but seems interesting.
I don't find this format fair at all.......EARN your position by QUALIFYING!!!!!!.....not current standing in the 'points'.....late

You do know they aren't using current standings or anything like that, right?
I'm not sure if you or making a joke or what, but I'm not getting it.
Alonso was quite entertaining all through.
Tires... no one stoppers tomorrow, I'd wager.
Rotten start for Lewis. Could he have kept the lead if he didn't screw it up? I don't really think so.

Chillax all please.
The trial format for Silverstone was announced many weeks ago. The teams all agreed on the rules of this trial. The plan is to try it two more times.
What is it?
"Normal" qualifying occurs on Friday. That sets the grid for the Sprint "Event." The Sprint event sets the grid for the Grid Prix.
All that info was available on the official F1 website but I had to review it many times myself to understand the way it would actually work.

Sorry bud. It looked like you were commenting on the format, not asking about what the format was.
I assure you nobody was purposefully rude to you in the above posts. We just didn't get what you were asking.
