Mileage? Condition? Price?

Have you seen this build? It's a similar application to what you're talking about. http://locostusa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=2142&start=25

Might be, but thats the heart of Honda's weird ass AWD system.

It could be made to work, if you defeat some of the hydraulics.

If the seller means Marietta, GA..I'm in Acworth (about 10min away) if you need someone to go pick it up.
Per and Friedgreencorrado: Thanks for the link and the offer to pick it up. Connecticut is a long way from Georgia, but I did send him an e-mail. We'll see how this goes.

Cool. I'm watching the thread, post if we need to trade e-mail addys and I'll send an IM or something. We can work out shipping afterwards..there's got to be some way to get it out of the budget.

This may be the coolest thread I've ever seen here. I've been thinking about something very much like this for YEARS.

Don't forget V-Max engines are shaft drive, but I don't know if you'll find one within your budget.

I've already done a couple of searches for a wrecked V-Max. I think that would be my first choice if I could find one. It would fit so well into the engine bay.

They've been around so long you'd think there'd be a bunch of bent ones out there. I guess that they're so fast that they just vaporize on impact.

My thought wasn't so much fit (as I can't see the engine bay dimensions) but rather torque vs hp. You'd probably get more hp from a straight 4 bike engine candidate within your budget but the Max might have the torque more appropriate to the Challenge format. What about a 1100 Magna engine? They ought to be stupid-cheap from a wreck. Just a thought.

Would a Swift GTi engine fit? Although I suppose that'd blow your budget...

Excellent. That's why we created the special class for the challenge, for people who want to think outside of the box.

Yeah, cause normal challengers are just too vanilla. :)

I have found a legends car with a 1999 Honda 900r engine for 1200 bucks on craigs list in alabama. that might help you.

Yeah, cars without tube frames just aren't that innovative...

You'd be surprised...take a look at the dyno charts on a motorcycle I4 vs V4 and that old theory just doesn't hold true. For example, compare a 2005 Kawasaki ZX12R engine and a 2005 Yamaha V-Max engine:

Kawasaki 1200 cc I4 vs Yamaha 1200cc V4
HP - 160 : 133
Torque (ft lbs) - 92 : 90

So, unless packaging is drastically better with the V over the I4, the modern I4 is really the way to go because the engines have seen more development work in nearly all cases.

Yah, that's why I put in that qualifier about budget. I doubt you'll find a $500 engine from 2005 available so I was thinking of the bikes from 1982 or so... I don't remember any I-4 contemporary with the original V-Max that put out equal torque although I think the GS-1100 or GPz1100 might have had more raw hp. I've drunk a LOT of alcohol since then so my memory can't be trusted.

I'm the guy that owns the BMod with the Miata diff. It uses Torsen LSD and the Miata hubs with custom control arms. There is a company in England that sells the sprocket adaptor to mount the u-joints, or you could fab something yourself to do the job. Here's a link to a Locost where they used the entire rear subframe from the Miata, easy to do with very little engineering. ( http://www.locostusa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1998&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 ).

Looking at your frame, if you intend to mount your engine inline (like mine) you will need to modify the left side of the frame to clearance the head and exhaust. It looks like it would be easier if you put it in transverse and run a chain drive. Lots of pictures here of different cars to give you ideas ( http://sports.racer.net/index1.html ).

As for engines you can probably find a Yamaha R1 from '99 or '00 for around $500, maybe less. Your looking at 140 - 150 hp from a carburated engine, they weigh about 160 lbs wet.

Good luck, your gonna have a blast!

While it doesn't make sense at first, the newer bike engines are cheaper. More currently on the road means more wrecked. You should be able to find a complete 600cc pullout less than 4 years old for around $500.

138Maycar's solution is gonna be the killer setup for Woody's ride. The price is right, the parts are known, and if something takes a dump the day before the challenge you are a junkyard away from spare parts.

DO!

these are the actual dyno numbers. http://www.magnaownersoftexas.com/v65/dynochart.gif

its a shaft drive 1098cc motor that can be had for cheap. efi will of course help those power numbers if the budget permits. these are what originally drew me to it.

the output would be offset to the side but actually connecting it to a diff would be dead simple. not sure if this is a good option for you but for budget, displacement, and shaft drive it is an option.

definitely excited to see whatever you end up doing

Thanks to a link from Per and some help from Friedgreencorrado, I've scored some free bodywork. Now I just need to figure out how to get it from Georgia to Connecticut.

I was talking to a Honda bike mechanic about Goldwing engines and HE SAID that the Goldwing rotated in the proper direction for a car diff. HE SAID he had an engine he was putting in a small play car.

So maybe the Honda would be an option. I did find out that until you get to a pretty current model they don't really make all that much power, but a newer engine is for all intents and purposes (based upon a dyno plot) a Miata engine in a much smaller package. It has a torque curve more like a car than a bike.

If you decide to go chain drive, I have an RC51 engine that would make packaging easy (It's very narrow). $550 if you're interested

It's missing one plug wire, but otherwise it has the full wiring harness and ecu. and the oil cooler
