You are correct,  I didn't realize it had changed.  I am curious as to why Stroll wasn't pitted during the safety car period. Any advantage he gained would be lost as soon as he had to change tires.

Crazy weekend F2 was entertaining race Schumi with the wi and a inspiring drive in race#2. F3 Logan was spun out in Race#1 then made a boneheaded move in Race#2 that took him and his teammate, big repercussions on the championship for Logan with only two race left. Then of course F1 race where Kmags created the most interesting race of the season. Makes me think that F1 needs the Nascar style cautions every race.

If you had told me Saturday that a Sainz P2 would make me a tiny bit sad I'd have disbelieved you. Super stoked for the top 4 though.

I hope the new cars in '22 work better in the draft.

"RED X" - A light system used at monza to indicate that the pit lane entry is closed. It is displayed at parabolic outside fence.

So the timeline of events was:

  1. Yellow flag, double yellow flag
  2. Safety Car AND pits closed. This is not normal but only due to the corner workers indicating they would push the car jnto the pits.
  3. Simultaneously with #2 RED X light and SC signs shown. Message sent to all of the teams.
  4. MB   Tell reporters that they have a text to talk system that didn't recognize the pits closed language so the pit wall crew heard SC but missed  the pits were closed until they read the message itself too late..

Red flagging the race was after the SC restart.

Tires are allowed to be changed based on safety reasons. In the usual red flag situation, there are carbon bits everywhere. Due to some massive crash. In this case it wasn't  needed but the rule is valid and just on safety grounds.

What I found amazing is that someone at the factory was first to see the pits closed part of the safety car message.  They spoke over the open telecommunications line to the pits in Monza.

If it were a like for like tire change, that would be fine.  But to get free time with car, not so much, and to get a untimed tire change, no.

Next up: job posting at MB for a guy who sits there and reads the text alerts aloud into a squawk box.

But that's assuming the team has another set of the same tires available. It's the same rule for everyone, at least.

True- but the advantage of a non-timed stop at all seems to be worse than that possibility.  Even a SC or VSC is a timed stop- where a mess up has cost.  Untimed stops are incredibly unfair.  I guess that's one of the bad side effects to a standing re-start- if they did a SC restart, then the cars could be forced to stop before the flag.

I'm not all that happy that even Mercedes was able to modifiy one of their cars for free.  Didn't help Bottas much, if at all.  But that should not happen.

At least as I see it.

I guess it's such a rare occurrence that it's not worth getting too upset over. And you certainly can't plan for it, there is absolutely no strategic way to use this. You can only fail to take advantage.

I don't know what was up with the Mercedes. That was odd. I didn't follow exactly what they used as a justification or even what they did - swap out some bodywork for better cooling?

At least nobody's complaining that the racing was boring :)

Mercedes removed (changed?) panels to help cooling in traffic - though I'm not sure under what guise, it's apparently allowed during the red flags.

Someone, somewhere made a drunken trifecta bet and is pretty happy right now.......

If you didn't see it yet, somebody in Finland bet 20 cents on the trifecta and won 33,000 euro. Odds were something like 166,000:1.

As soon as the safety car and pit stop were called, the guys on the wall turned around to watch the pit stop which meant they weren't looking at the monitors any more.  The guys back at the factory didn't have to do that.

As for the "changes to the car under red flag" thing 20 years ago a red flag within the first 2 laps used to allow drivers to switch to the spare car to take the restart!  Big crash in turn 1 and you'd see 3 or 4 drivers sprinting back to the pit lane. :)

Perez out at Racing Point. Not surprised at all by the news, but looks like Seb's spot is ready for next year.

I think Perez ends up at Hass.

Yeah, the logical move is to have Checo and Hulk at Haas and one of the zillion Ferarri F2 stars in for Kimi at Alfa.  Haas does have a really strange affinity for Grosjean, but Checo is a serious upgrade on either of them.

The other nice thing for Haas is that they get a driver from the Americas.  Checo goes from a Canadian team to a US team- and Haas would pick up a lot of new fans.

Not to mention they get Checo's $! I sometimes wonder whether Haas cares about any fans who don't also have purchasing discretion over CNC machines.

Perez is good and I can see him and Grojean cheeky at Haas.

Has anyone read a report on if Pirelli will start allowing teams to choose their tire allocation at some time this year?

Does anyone wonder if Stroll handed Perez a HUGE paycheck to kick rocks and try to find a seat elsewhere? I mean he probably figured they were going to find a loophole to put Vettel in his spot anyway.

That's the speculation I'm seeing.

What I'm wondering is how much better 2021 Vettel will be than Checo? It doesn't seem like Vettel is the same guy since he left Red Bull.

I'm on the fence about that, but my best guess is that he will flounder. If his confidence has been in the toilet this whole time, I don't think he's going to be any happier with a lower funded program.

I don't know why I find Checo getting put to pasture rubs me so wrong but boy it does. I know racing is a tough business but to out perform your teammate significantly and get booted for someone who has struggled after carrying the company (team) through it's darkest times seems like a crap sandwich.

I hope he lands a good ride (although realistically there doesn't seem to be any) for '21 and '22 and the new AM crew struggles greatly with their new 4x world champion who couldn't and can't compete with a 2-3 year veteran.
