Keep the money in the bank. Its harder to come by than a "deal" on a truck.

Next year looks less stable than this year from my perspective.

my 2cents would sell the van is you hate it. walk away from spending that much on a newer truck and for less then 5000 you could find a nice used truck somewhere around you that could be crew cab or just pick up a minivan or something and add turbo...... just sometthing about the 10sec dodge caravan running around the nets....

So I was this close to buying the 2wd Tundra that I asked about originally. I even hammered out a deal on Wednesday, and was going to pick it up tomorrow. I back out today though as I am unsure what to do at this point with no contract.

I was wondering though it seems I could get the equivalent Nissan Titan for less money, and it seems the long bed crew cab 2wd is a little more common than in a Toyota. Is the Titan a decent truck,or back of the pack compared to the other full sized trucks. The Tundra I was planning on buying was not a long bed,but the 6.5' bed is a fair bit bigger than the normal bed on the Ford/Chevy/GMC/Dodge 1/2 ton trucks which have around a 5.5-6' bed. One of the main reasons I was looking at the Tundra was the longer bed. Also you can get a full length bed if you want which isn't possible on the Ford/GM trucks, and is super rare on the Dodge.

I really don't want a 3/4 or 1-ton truck as even the modern 1/2 ton is probably more than I need most of the time, but the compacts seem too small and under powered to me. Any suggestions on what to do? My van is falling apart around me. The rear axle pinion leak is fixed but the trans is making noise now,and I am not sure why. Plus it is rotting away. I was thinking maybe around 2004-2008 for a range, and I would like to be around $19K at the high end with less than 100k miles.

Ram 1/2 ton Quad Cabs can be had with a 6.5' bed. I prefer that bed length to the Chevy Crew Cabs, which for a while only came in the short short bed (5.5').

Maybe you'll get it mid 18s. Want and need is a tricky position to be in. I don't have kids yet so financially I'm fine. My Jeep was starting to be unreliable and rusty plus it couldn't tow my trailer and race car so I was in the market for an SUV that would do all those things plus be comfortable and look nice. It sounds like you need something that can tow and be your DD in the winter just like me. I waited until my wife paid off her Rav4 before I bought my Tahoe. Not that we couldn't afford both but with this economy you never know...

The really sad thing is that the truck was probably a trade in and they gave some poor schlub 9K for it and now they will only come down $595. I would ride my bicycle in winter before I bought a used vehicle from a dealer. I would walk on that one even if it is hard to find.

For comparison... I bought a 4yr old, Crew Cab Chevy 2500HD 4x4 6.6L diesel with 72k on it and full leather interior, power everything, plated and wired for a 5th wheel hitch for $19995. The rub is that it gets better fuel mileage than that Toyota you are looking at. I could have bought similarly equipped non-diesels for 12-15k all day long. Heck - I sold a 100k nice 8yr old SR5 Tundra 4x4 v8 for $7500 to buy it.

To sum up:

I don't know what thngs cost where you are but... holy hell that is a lot of $$ for an almost 4yr old 2WD PU with a partial respray.

No respray it seemed just a buffing that didn't take so well. Maybe it is due to it being a certified pre-owned truck with a good warranty that raises the price? Everything around the country in this mileage/age range is about the same price. Look 'em up trust me.

How about this truck?

Looks dark gray to me instead of the listed "black",but maybe I am off on that. The long bed is probably a bit tougher to park, but will hold a lot more stuff.

Looks about like one in my area would run at a dealership.

This one, for example.

Does it make any sense at all to keep the van,and buy a Mazda5 manual like I wanted a few years ago? I think I can find a used one in the $8-9k range, and then I have a vehicle I like to drive that gets good gas mileage while hauling the kids, and the van for dump runs, and towing the camper? I know Javelin would like this option.
