Put some of that blue tape over you license plates at auto-crosses and watch out what you put on Social media about events...

I like that the first comment on the article was basically "You've gotta stop expecting your insurance to be useful and convenient or you'll pay through the nose". Makes you wonder what it is about the 'free market' that's not giving a better result here.
Just a week or so ago in another insurance thread here it was suggested that if you want to know what your insurance thinks about your activities, why dont you just call them and lay it all out? Well, here's ONE answer to that.
Well, at least this answers the question to an argument that comes up on here often...
Autox isn't racing.
Wasn't this an issue in the past where Subaru was voiding warranties for autox?
Just so happens this is a Subaru???
I wonder if he still has a warranty?
I wonder if there's conspiracy here?

I seem to recall it was mitsu who gave out SCCA memberships then searched the results to denies warranty work.

Mitsu also actively went to autox events and wrote down every evo's vin or plate number they could find to instantly void the warranties....

While I agree with you, the OP of that article posted on facebook that he just finished "an entire weekend of racing".
Makes it pretty easy to understand why they thought he was racing.
I think worrying about removing plates and covering VINs at events is a bit ridiculous. If someone is trying that hard to track you down to come up with a reason to drop your coverage, you probably shouldn't be doing business with them anyway. They'd probably treat you like an enemy during the claims process, too!
Any halfway decent insurer will courteously point out to you that you have no coverage whatsoever on the track or autocross course, but happily take your money to insure you for the drive there and back. I think the guy's Facebook posts about "racing" just gave Geico the excuse they were looking for to drop him after his claims.
I find that the whole car insurance industry has occasional flare-ups of racerphobia, then it dies down and they go back to not caring. Sucks to get caught during a flare-up though.

Actually, most of the derkas from jalopnik have moved on and can be found at other crappy websites (TTAC especially). The only dud they have left is Torch. Sam Lehto, Tavarish, and Doug DeMuro are all regular columnists so Jalop is actually daily reading now. Kinja/Gawker is still stupid and sucks, but the Jalop corner is pretty good.

Good friend of mine just had to warranty the rear diff on his 2015 WRX. Brought it in with all the required SCCA National Tour and ProSolo decals on it. Had no issues with it.
Take a photo of some guys plates that you don't like, and run them as cover-ups over your plate during the slalom.
Equally insidious, but not yet appreciated, is the introduction of the monitored driving devices from your insurance company. How long do you think it will be before they are mandatory and installed as a module in all new cars? I give it 7 years.

Until they outlaw cars without autopilot, there are about 3 decades worth of cars made all over the world that I really like and can enjoy for the rest of my lifespan.
Once autopilot is mandatory, I'll get into motorcycles.
Why Autopilot? Because that is the technology that is the watershed for them to monitor EVERYTHING you're doing. You know....for safety.

Smart people know car ads are BS, manufacturers don't want to warrantee hard-use cars, and insurance companies don't want to cover high-risk usage. I can't say anything polite about people who point at ads as excuses or whine about insurance companies trying to remove high-risk customers.
Everyone demands the rights and freedom to do whatever they want, but they're also the first ones to try and blame anyone but themselves for the consequences, and if possible, have someone else cover for their screw-ups. Don't get me started on riding without a helmet because, dammit, I have my rights... and get off my lawn!

Travis Okulski, the former editor, left so the amount of click-bait garbage went down astronomically.
He now runs Road and Track...... strangely at the same time it's become filled with spam and slide shows.
Gawker is a E36 M3 company with absolutely no morals still though.

Hulk Hogan agrees with this assessment.

The fact that you're NOT FREE to tell them to stuff it if you don't think their "product" is worth your money. The fact that you're not allowed to opt out is what let them build ins. into a total racket.
