I have nothing significant to contribute; however, that car looks pretty cool without the front end tbh.

It sure seems to me that for a niece car that doesn't sell in huge quantities that there are a lot of these coming off the road.    Is that because the cars are in the hands of idiot drivers?  Is it because the car attracts an owner who "takes chances"?  Or, is it because parts availability is making repair costs significant?

Maybe all three but I think more on #1.  I live in Chicago and once the temps drop the number of wrecks I see on the local 86 group is staggering.  Generally owned by younger men b/c it's a cool car (and it is...) and it's relatively cheap, but not many have real experience with RWD and when traction gets low bad things start to happen.  Like clockwork every November there will be posts that pop up about whether they need winter tires for their dailies, and inevitably someone will talk about how they use their 200tw tires all year round and have survived...

A quick flip through Search Tempest...

$8.5k, already rebuilt

$10k w/98k

$8.9k rebuilt

$8.7k rebuilt

Non-rebuilt seems rare on these, especially inexpensive ones.

If it is owned by a shop, try to stop by the shop and talk to someone who isn’t the manager or person trying to sell it. I’m sure a bunch of the techs know some history on the car. Bring donuts and you will make friends.

Also, you might try talking to the main contact at the shop and tell him your plans for the car. They might geek out on the idea and tell you why they are bailing on the project. I think it’s worth a drive to look at the car.

I will say its funny to have a stock hood on a car that is lighter than most all carbon fiber aftermarket hoods made for it... sucks about parts availability though.

Also, theory about all the front end damage... stock tires....and driver may have not paid attention and gotten in a panic braking situation. They are okay tires for general driving, but when SHTF they will not stop the car like a proper grippy summer rubber will. While the tires are fun, they always felt lacking in the braking department for me, especially in the wet... always gave extra room for braking cushion with the stock tires. The stock tires are a two edged sword on this car.
