A really nice 84 Carrera popped up locally and I couldn't resist going to see it. Didn't get to drive because snow, slush, salt etc but I sat in it and started it up. This was one of the only times I've seen one in person and they are striking, beautiful cars. The interior ergonomics were indeed a little weird though. I'm 5'9 155 lbs with normal proportions and after adjusting the seat to a proper driving position, the wheel was touching my legs .. my NA Miata was like this too, guess it's an old car thing. On the BMWs I keep the tilt near the top with the telescoping part pushed all the way in. Clutch was heavy but not that much heavier than either BMW, but felt too far away almost, like it was a stretch to push it all the way to the floor. Getting my right foot past the brake pedal to the gas was seriously tight also, but maybe the brake pedal can be adjusted toward the left. The 915 transmission was old school and wacky but honestly no complaints with it at least based on messing with the lever with a stationary car. It was tight, and I don't mind long throws or waiting for synchros at all. I'm going back in a few days to check it out again and to hopefully get a better feel for all of the above oddities.

There's an old saw that the 911 is a triumph of engineering over design. The oddities either become charming or you find out they're not the car for you.
If they charm you and you engineer the right pedal and seat adjustment they're super fun.

The interior ergonomics can seem weird. Is that a feature or a bug? That’s for you to decide. I think of these models as updated 1960s cars, not exactly contemporaries for the rest of 1984.
The 915 gearbox is paired with a cable clutch, so simpler and lighter but also a heavier feel. The omega spring could also be weak/bad.
I have an ’84 and like how it features several details from the earlier cars–like the steering wheel, rear filler pannel, seats, center console, etc. IIRC, 1984 was also the last year for a fender-mounted antenna.
