You can get spot on by putting them up against the wall, put a board on top. Make a mark on the wall at the board level.  Add 100 lbs of weight.  Make another mark on the wall at the board level.  Then a little maffs and you got it.  The maffs is easy.  100 lbs / distance between the marks in inches gives you POUNDS per INCH.   Example:  100 lbs moves the board 1/2 inch:  100/.5= 200 POUNDS per INCH.  You can use your phone as a calculator.  You have the calculator ap, right?

Let's say that you don't have a hundred pound weight, but you have a helper.  Put your helper on a scale.  Record weight.  Put your helper on the board.  Make mark.  Divide helper's weight by distance in lines on the wall.  Same thing.

True but with 450lb springs your talking measuring 1/4 of an inch and if you're off 1/16 of an inch your spring could measure from 350ish to 550ish.

Deadskunk, did you stumble on close out the coil overs, or are they still available on ebay?  All I see are pricier, not for 99+  year cars, and no spring rates listed.  Your help would be appreciated.

Not on close-out that I recall. There were bunches of them, from several different sellers for $70 , or less. Now, to be clear, I'm talking about coilover conversion sleeves, top hats and springs only, not shock absorbers. Spring rates were not listed, I just gambled that the kit would be good enough and it worked great.

Edit: I searched for the vendor and all they appear to be selling now are EFI fuel pumps for offroad vehicles, no coilover kits. My original receipt was for a 1999-2005 Miata coilover kit. I wonder oif these vendors buy a container load of whatever and sell it ,then sell whatever is the next thing they can find.

2nd Edit: I can find NA Miata kits and I'm pretty sure they'll work.
