i have been a subscriber of GRM for years. off and on lurker here on the site. recently picked up a 2012 genesis coupe 2.0T with the manual....it's a fun tossable car and am wondering why i do not see any on the site.
is it a bad car?. i see BRZ content and they are both in the same "class" of car....just wondering
I can't wait for it to get old enough to gain "cheap Korean beater" status. I wouldn't mind adding one to my fleet.
Its way way larger & heavier than a BRZ. It seems to be its competition would be more like G37 coupe, but the G37 has a solid power advantage.
For the right price anything can be fun though :P

weight difference between the BRZ and the Genesis, and the Genesis and the G37 coupe are comparable roughly 450LBS
My neighbor had one. Was a PITA and he had to sell it with 120k for next to nothing because the slave cylinder went out and it’s inside the transmission, thus more costly to fix than the car was worth.
He also said changing the spark plugs was a awful job requiring the intake manifold to be removed. Not sure if it was the turbo four or the V6.
I wasn’t exactly sold on them based on his experience, but it’s just one data point.
In reply to CyberEric :
Those two data points describe basically all modern manual transmission vehicles and V6s.
IMO there are enough, more Genesis specific things to gripe about, to mention things that are normal nowadays.
(like how wiiiide the car is. It's perfect if you are five feet tall and four feet wide)

Nothing against the Genesis Coupe, but on paper it seems like the S197 Mustang with the 300hp v6 would be some pretty stiff competition. They're dimensionally very similar, get similar fuel economy ratings (although the Genesis requires more expensive Premium unleaded), and the Mustang obviously has an enormous aftermarket to tap into.
Ok.... I thought I heard a dog whistle even if the dr told me I physically can't....
gen coupe. Fun car. Really good grand touring car. Too big to be a sports car. Early cars were down on power(210hp turbo4 and 3500lbs is tough). The face lifted cars were better. The lambda v6 is one of the sweetest sounding v6's this side of the Atlantic (Alfa still owns that title imo and the Japanese don't have a clue).
they were built in the up and coming era if the Korean empire. Almost as good as the g35 but not quite. There are a lot of performance upgrades available. The 2.0 is solid to about 300whp but needs a bottom end to go beyond that for more than a couple pulls. The v6 tunes well and if you get the right package you get lsd, brembos and a manual.
I love em. Wife says I can't have one. So I have the worlds most expensive $500 tiburon
In reply to STM317 :
Actually they don't require premium. They require premium to achieve their reported power numbers but run fine on 87 (unlike Acuras).
Wasn't the big complaint on turbos a really wonky power delivery? Did the aftermarket ever fix that?

Ah, I did wonder about that. I was just going off of what it said on the fueleconomy.gov site.
The 2.0Ts love to blow up, the shifter is junk, the front end and rear end don't feel like they're on speaking terms and the diff mount situation is embarassing. That being said, at least locally to me they are fantastic value.

part of it was the e-throttle mapping of that era. Tuners got that fixed.
In reply to STM317 :
yeah, they are fine on 87 but if you want that last bit of power fill'er up with the good stuff
With all that being said, I'd rock a 3.8 r-spec in a heartbeat. Like this one.

fixed?
Dyno of stock 2019 Veloster Turbo below :(

190/200 to the wheels? That's pretty awesome. I never said Hyundai fixed it. Tuning does though. The First gen Forte non-turbo had the same issue with serious lag. Tuned it felt like a cable throttle. Of course, then I NEEDED 93 octane. But hey it was a fun car.
Do I like it? Yes.
But for me, it falls short. I test drove one back in 2013-2015 time frame, it was either new on the lot or slightly used. Short test drive, but I came out of it thinking that the car had an identity crisis. It was built on a luxury car chassis, but it had economy car appointments. It was a muscle car size without the power - the comp would have been the V6 Mustang. It was like it looked at a BRZ (was it before or after the frisbee twins?), Miata, G35/37 coupe, and Mustang, and said "Yeah, that is our competition!" without realizing that, outside of this board, not many are cross shopping those vehicles. Which was unfortunate because it was a very decent car. It just didn't do anything any better than any of its competition. Good chance with depreciation it comes back on my radar at some point. Shame we never got the 5.0 in it. That would have been a fun car.
The styling never was right to me either. The first gen, I didn't like the grill. Reminded me too much of a 90's Sonata, though a Tiburon is probably a more fair comparison, I couldn't get it out of my head. The second generation was too busy, the hood specifically turned me off. But that is all personal qualms.

All of this. Had they shoehorned the Tau in there it would have been a competitor I think. As is, its a good grand tourer
Didn't the manual transmissions in the first model year or two have a bunch of major issues that soured a lot of enthusiasts to the car?

I would still LOVE to have one in that weird green color that was available early on.
Kind of like a cheaper Pantera. A very good looking car that needs some sorting. Might be interesting if got a whole lot cheaper.

there was a recall where they replaced the transmissions and the 13-up had the main issues fixed first time out.
My old boss bought a new V6 R a couple of years ago. Definitely drives better than the Mustang and the v6 does sound glorious. One of the best sounding engines period. His car has held up pretty well, no real issues. Of course he's not a young guy so its babied. I would not consider it a car in the same vein as the BRZ, and some of the interior feels cheap, but for what it is it is a nice car.

you compare the Gen coupe to a mustang/350z not a brz

Yeah, honestly I like this motor and I bet its an excellent DD engine with a tune.
I just need to find it packaged in a 5 door config. That's not easy to do.
Did anyone stuff a Genesis 5.0 in one? That I'd love to see.
