One of the cars that has ended up under consideration for SWMBO and I to pick up in our search for a convertible is, against the odds, largely what I ultimately would love to have long-term as a convertible: a late-model Corvair convertible. The difficulty? Some assembly required, and no title. Specifically, this one: http://louisville.craigslist.org/cto/5092102933.html
I'm rather surprised that SWMBO actually likes the idea of this car since there's pretty much no chance it would be drivable until next spring at the earliest unless the engine is a really easy fix, I can quickly get and install a new top, and everything else just needs some cleaning at the worst (read: 'It would take a miracle'). The work itself though doesn't bother me assuming the car itself is solid- what does concern me given the... 'adventures'... I had to go through in getting the 'D titled and registered here is the lack of a title.
I don't know whether the car -ever- had a title (I don't like calling unless I absolutely have to and the seller only has a phone # as contact... I really don't like talking on the phone -_-;) or not, but does anyone have any experience with titling and registering a car this old here in KY? Thanks!
Title is less of a concern with an older car. Call the DMV and see what the procedure is. I've brought a couple into Texas with no title ans I just needed the right title application and the last registration from the former state. A lot of states don't title over 25 years old.

Get the seller to fill out this form and get a new title from Kentucky.
Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title or Registration (Form TC 96-182)
If the current owner did have a valid title at one time and they just can't find the paperwork, do this and have them simply apply for a replacement.
On the other hand, if the current owner never had a valid title in their name, technically they don't own it. Walk away if that's the case.

My experience with Kentucky is that they are pretty particular about proper titles, no matter the age. I have asked about non-running cars and projects before and have been told that they won't even do the out-of-state inspection if the car doesn't arrive under it's own power and passes their very limited road-worthiness inspection. If the car was a project that some one brought into the state, it may not have ever been titled in the Commonwealth, so you'd have to search around to find the person in whose name the title was issued (or their estate...) and then get them to get a replacement title issued and then sign it and notarize it for you.
I think it'd have to be a hell of a deal to go through all that. There may be some way to wash it through one of the states that doesn't do titles for older cars, but if you're going to do it by the book, KY doesn't make it easy.

That's what I found too when I bought the DeLorean, and it was even worse since it had been last titled in Ohio. I was lucky and my parents were down in Atlanta and Georgia doesn't do titles for cars older than 25 years or so and so simply inspected the VIN and registered the car. Brought it back up here later and applied to transfer it and had no problems at all and since there wasn't a title they issued a new one.
Unfortunately my parents now live down in Texas so that's not feasible any more...
Can always go the vermont route. Did it with the rx7 and it worked out fine.
