Just wondering who has actual experience with using one of these builds for something like a NASA, SCCA, or other sanctioned track day? They seem like great track toys and I've always wanted to strip a vette chassis for this reason, and they're becoming more and more popular, but I'm afraid of showing up to an HPDE and having the organizer or all the instructors saying No Berkleying Way!

Has anyone actually had success with track-day'ing one of these builds?

Matt Farrah didn’t like the Teg-ro-cet. He said it was floppy, but I don’t like that guy and his lack of knowledge is stunning.

Very likely no rallyx unless cage meets scca IT rules, or you are a logbooked rally car, and scca autox might boot you to a mod or something.

Call beforehand. I can't imagine many hpdes would be happy to have them run.

I really want one but can't figure out where to drive them.

There's no specific reason one of these cars couldn't do track days like any other car and they would definitely be in AMod in SCCA autocross.

For whatever it's worth I've seen several homebuilt exo-cars (though never any based of miata/corvettes/etc) at NASA track days (specifically nasa-norcal) and they never care as long as they pass the safety inspections (i.e. fenders on open wheeled cars, 5/6 point harness properly installed, helmet clearance, etc, etc)

I saw a vette kart at autocross and while it looked cool it was slow because it was very challenging to drive, even more so than a normal vette because of how light it was vs the power, sort of like the GRM article about the 3 exocets, the turbo one, the v8 one, and the v8 supercharged XXXOCET or whatever and how as insane as the other ones were the most fun was the turbo because you could control it.

So about running those in A mod, is there a list of rules and requirements somewhere?

Ah, you just need a bit of sensitivity. Trying to evaluate a car with less than 4 lbs/hp on an autocross is a bit foolish anyhow laugh

Really, a Ghettocet Miata isn't all that different from an Exocet. I'd expect it to be treated the same way - if it looks to be well executed, no worries. If it's a hack job, then like any other hack job it will be treated with suspicion.

When the Roadkill guys did their Vette Kart, they found that after removing all that weight, the spring rates and ride height were all wrong. I bet it would handle terrible if those things were not adjusted as well

The SCCA has their rulebook on their site.

No experience, but nets and arm restraints would probably make event organizers feel better about you.  Whatever equipment the sprint guys run, I would check that out.  Make it safe and you take away any reason for them to give you a hard time..

It's no different than running any caged open-wheel car. Some track days have separate sessions for race cars (caged/purpose-built) and street cars (uncaged production-based stuff) because they don't want to risk caged-on-uncaged violence, so in those you would have to run with the race cars. Checking the requirement for fenders is a good point. Track day safety is extremely permissive compared to any form of racing though, there's not much to worry about.

On a related note, I wonder how much weight you could draw out of a Nissan Leaf? 110 HP, 210 ft. lbs. 3300 lbs, 9.9 0-60. Strip a thousand pounds off of that, and considering the low cg you might have a pretty potent autocross rat.

Not a Leaf but certainly interesting increase in performance from another smallish Nissan
