I usually think of it as compensation. The people who behave this way are generally disempowered and ignored in life but would never admit it, even to themselves, but it makes them feel powerful to impose their stupidity onto others. They also like to do things like set off fireworks at 1am for an entire week around the 4th of July.
While I do think certain vehicles have a propensity to enable drivers to behave badly, it's definitely more the person driving than the cars themselves.
For example, we all call the Miata "The Answer". It's also "The Answer" for a particular local moron who took his stanced, loud, early Miata out and did a bunch of donuts around town a few weeks back. I had seen this guy (a younger guy) driving like an idiot before, but reality finally caught up with him. He got the cops called on him because he did it in the middle of the day all over the place, holding up traffic to show off. The chase that ensued after the cops caught up with the driver did not end well for them; I believe the car crashed and the driver was apprehended, being charged with all sorts of stuff.
In some cases, it's also the "young and stupid" factor that plays into this, which is what could have happened above. Most of us have hooned like idiots at some point, even on the street. I know I've gotten plenty of cars sideways on the street and used to do donuts in my Trans Am on the regular, but I grew up. Is it still fun? Of course it is! But on the street in the middle of busy traffic? Nope, no way I'm doing that. These days, I'm just happy to loaf around in the thing.
Some people never grow out of that phase, and that's when you get people doing burnouts at funerals, people pitching their Mustangs into crowds after cruise nights, etc. I bet they are real fun at parties, too.
