From what I understand, those neck doughnuts do nothing to help and can actually cause harm.  I wouldn't wear one.  If you're going to buy one piece of safety equipment besides your helmet, it should be a HANS.  You can run the Simpson one with stock 3 point belts.  People spend more on tires, suspension, tunes, etc, etc on their cars than a HANS costs so.....

A HANS was one of the few racing expenses where my wife not only said I should buy it, she followed up later to make sure I had done so.

I know this is a separate issue from what docwyte is discussing, but a car with a full cage should be carefully considered when driven on the street. I had a friend seriously injured when he was street driving his Lemons car. He'd decided it was cool to commute in it. Well, it wasn't. A minor accident resulted in some major injuries with lifetime - minor, but still lifetime - complications. He had back injuries from wearing the harness with no HANS, broken bones from contact with the cage, etc. It was nasty and ever since then I've remained committed to no cages without "all the gear." Once a car is caged it's a race car. No commuting please sirs!

It's scary when you think of all the guys doing these drag and drive events with full funny car cages around them with zero padding or a proper seat out on the open road.

Simpson Hybrid-S is the droid you're looking for... It is the only head restraint (that actually works) which is designed and tested specifically to be compatible with entirely stock safety systems.
