So i'm considering a fixer upper a 2012 GC for about $2000 with 150k on it. Owner says reverse is out, it slips badly but forward works as normal. Is this worth picking up and trying to fix? Anybody have experience with this tranny could it be a simple solenoid or sensor issue or more likely to be a total rebuild?
It's almost certainly an internal mechanical issue. Every electrically-controlled chrysler transmission that im aware of will still give you reverse and one or sometimes two forward ratios even with every connector unplugged from it. Additionally, there is really no way for a trans to experience a slip without suffering some kind of damage in the process. You can use the fluid condition as SOME indication of how far that damage has spread, but it's pointless information if you're not going to be repairing that unit and just intend to swap it out. If you want to do it id just put a used unit in it. I sort of doubt it's worth 2k with a slipping trans unless the rest of it is really nice, though. Look up trade-in value for one that's actually drivable and then subtract what a shop would charge to install a used trans. That number might actually be near zero. Will $1200 fly?
thanks that's kind of what i arrived at too. doubt its worth the hassle when I can find a running one for 4k.

This 2006 Caravan of mine had a bad/physically broken trans speed sensor. That meant that the speedo did not work and the car would only drive in 2nd gear. But...it still went into reverse properly.
So, though I wish it was a cheap/easy repair like mine; it might not be. However, this spark plug sized speed sensor in located on the top. front of the trans case. Easy to see by just turning the front wheels hard to the left. I would only take you minutes to see if the wiring to the unit is good.
