Project uses Ford 8.8 center section and at this point original Miata rar hubs.
I can get axles from either Boss Frog or the Axle Shop for $1000. Fair enough.
But then I see where the FF guys are selling a similar axle for like $350 or so.
Is there a less expensive path for the Miata rear axles that I should be aware of before I pull the trigger? Is there a DIY option that might apply where I make my own bits? Never done CV work to date.

Also interested. I will shortly be in a similar situation needing axles that fit Miata on the outer ends and Chrysler on the inner ends.
Check out the FF forums. We bought 3 axle shafts there from guys who got the IRS kit and ended up not using it. Picked up all three for around $100 or so.
If you run the FF axles, you will still need to figure out the wheel hub side. You can have the miata hubs re-broached to fit the cobra axle cup splines, have the shafts re-splined to fit in miata outboard CV cups, buy a hub made to fit both the cobra axle and the miata upright, or get some t-bird/cougar/MkVIII hubs and have them turned down to fit the miata bearings. We did the last option at Wreck Racing with out V8 miata. If you do that, you'll have a 5x4.5" bolt pattern on the back of the car and won't be able to run miata rotors without a little more machine work to either the hubs or the miata rotors.
With RX7 conversions we use Ford exploder inner CV, custom length shaft splined on the other end for RX7 outer CV.

This seems like both a logical path and a better price.
http://monstermiata.webs.com/differentials.htm $650 for the axles and the broaching. Still need to deal with two way shipping and the PITA to do so, so its not going to be a huge savings.
