Ok, this is a subject that has really gotten me interested, ever since using the MoTeC feature on GTR2 a few years back and browsing over the data with the free version of MoTeC i2; data acquisition, or outright real-time telemetry. I will freely admit that I haven't done much research on this, but do any of you all have experience with open-source DAQ systems? I don't have the money required for the initial buy-in on a MoTeC or AIM datalogger system, but I think that an open source alternative could serve my uses quite well and might be easier to tailor to my needs. Any reccomendations on this subject?
If you're using OBD-II, I'd look at some of the smart phone apps. Event the accelerometer based stuff has gotten pretty good.
Innovate's OT-2 is pretty darn good, and I love the interface. They don't offer a display function that really suits road race or autocross events specifically yet, though. I'm hoping for an update to help with this.
The shortfall for any of the phone-based systems seems to be finding a way to display the data that's collected.
For instance, I collected this from a recent autocross in my Mazda2 using gMeter for the iPhone -

Sure, it's neat but what to do with it? Making charts and graphs is less fun than driving.
In closing, it's really nice when I get to use tools like Traqmate.
I am about to start building my own DAQ system using an Ardiuno board I will post more when I get to it.

Me, too. Ours will use RaceChrono, which is not really open, but the guy who writes it is really good at responding to requests.
We hope to outline the build here http://home.comcast.net/~alfa73/site/
(very bad website)
