drifting has made them a little pricey but if you can find a nice one for a reasonable price then you will definately have fun!!!
Well, compared to the UK they're still rather cheap over here. Something to do with the Irish buying them up for drifting and rallying, plus the climate doing its worst to them.
I've had AE86s(2) for over 16 years... I went a familiar, yet different route, I "restored"(to be read as hot rodded) an AE71.... http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/reader-rides/2130/
not quite finished yet.... but she is about 80 percent now... fully driveable, with the interior needing reassembly
Yeah, I want one, too, but I'm right in the heart of drift country. Clapped-out non-running SR5s go for $1k, and running GTSs are more like $3-5k with questionable mods.
It sucks.
yep, most uk ones no longer reside there, all have gone the way of St. Patrick. I don't remember them being too too expensive, but they weren't cheap at least 15yrs ago. the Irish love their old mk2 Escorts as well - tarmac rallying was always monster huge.
A good one in the UK is going to be anything from GBP6k well into five figures - call it $10k and more. Pretty much all of them are Japanese imports and the good ones are commanding very high prices in Japan.
I was looking for one and gave up. Found one GTS that was more rust than car and he wanted too much for it. But it was going to be a little less for me 'cause I didn't want the "rimz". Didn't really instill confidance.
I, too, gave up on the AE86 quest. It's the same deal down here - people asking ludicrous amounts for dull, 4AC-equipped "all original" models, or equally ridiculous prices for rough, rusty imports and dodgy 4AGE conversions.
Then dont look at this clean-as-a-whistle notchback
...and just for fun, you should definitely pay no attention to the beast under the hood:
Ae86 is my dream car, I have terribly exciting thoughts about building a street legal track car from one. Theres a few for sale here in the midwest that dont look terrible for the price. The one above has been for sale here on and off over the last few months (years?). They guy wants $7K - ohhhh if I had a few spare stacks right now...
