(yeah just noticed.... I know Univers-i-ty. I'll blame it on the lack of sleep, and if you've been in FSAE you know what I'm talking about!)
I'll just start out with this....
and keep adding pics and some commentary as necessary.
Me? I'm the powertrain team lead for our team.
that's me on the left. Our engine blew at 3AM the DAY OF COMP and we managed to make it to MIS by 8am and have a tech-ed and running car the same day.
The F4i dyno motor that we ran the car with proved to be up to the task even after the hundreds of hours I've spent torturing it. It still lays down the power over and over and here's the proof.
that was shortly after a 4.15 accel run on sticker tires with no practice time in the car.
A couple of us ran back to school to cut, sleeve, and weld an old axle to length. This would have gotten us by had we not left the CV joint behind.... We missed the autocross because of that but still managed to finish and finish well. We're still waiting on the official endurance and overall scores.
Titanium Yosh pipe purple from dyno hours... I melted the tip right off it and had to weld it back up just to get the silencer to seal.
This is Matt, He weighs 120 lbs with a bunch of wrenches in his pocket and is berklying fast when hes not spinning...
I don't want to tread on the toes of the GRM guys and gals when it comes to promoting business' but I think a thank you is in order for any company school or individual that donates their time money or services to help the FSAE program. That being said check out the intake I designed ;)
For some added Grassroots Motorsports flavor, this is my prototype intake and exhaust.
That's right, PVC pipe, wood, gobs of bondo, lots of silicone, EMT conduit for exhuast, zipties and a ratchet strap to make sure it wouldn't vibrate off. You can call it hack all you want but it made 77hp and 46 ft-lb off the sprocket :D
Nice work. Nothing wrong with a shout-out to sponsors, I wish our list was that long.
Did it keep running? Unlike the many spins and poor starts at our event last year?
Good job- too bad we could not help break the car on the 2nd, when we originally hoped to have an event at OU. You all would have gotten a little more sleep.
Eric
You can still bring it out NEXT weekend... right Eric?
I will be there, possibly bringing the Holly Mob.
Nice work, I see you guys out in the parking lot by Pioneer and Squirrel all the time.
Good work guys! I am amazed at how similar a test intake I designed when we were getting data. An old cut up tube style manifold and some bored out PVC to make sliding runners. Worked like a champion at getting our desired lengths.
This year at Michigan International went pretty smoothly for RIT. We are proud to say this is the first competition in a while that we didn't have to pull an engine for any reason. One minor intake fix and a few tech things and we were racing.
We understand your pain of having to drive to a machine shop for some late night manufacturing. Two years ago we drove to Akron to make a diff cap from a blank that was driven out from Rochester to meet us there. Leaving the track at 6:00pm and arriving back at 7:00am netted us a rebuilt diff in time for a 10:00am endurance.
It was a good competition this year and I am really glad to see that the increased cost didn't turn people away. Good luck in getting next years car together.

Ha ha alfadriver. Yeah I spent a LOT of time working out the tuning issues. Now you can stab throttle right down to below idle without stalling at all. The spins on the other hand.... 75 hp in a 65" wheelbase car with some rookies will do that too ya. How come everyone remembers the spins and stalls but no one mentions who set FTD???
I hope everyone had fun out there today, it was beautiful out. I got hung up catching up with everything I ditched to get the car done.
Yep klipless, Lot 3 is our designated test area. We go next door tell the OU Police that we're heading out and we can test there at any time of the day or night as long as it's free of cars (not during class hours).
and thanks GhiaMonster, work on the new car has already begun.
Here's some more pics.
Us and the Estonians (you may see them in some old ratted out custom vans they picked up on Craigslist and headed West with after comp.
we said we wouldn't shave till the car ran, then we didn't have time to shave...
mah roller barrel throttle
10 min till Autocross.... didn't make it
"Wild Barry Punch" If you run Detroit SCCA you may know his red Civic he ran in STS, he also won the FSAE class last year.
In the nude! mmmm Penske Kaz shocks
