Its a perfect example where slowing down to go faster is true. Sideways and wildly sawing at the wheel is great for the movies though.
The race footage is pretty good too. The GT40 looks very squirrely in the wet.

Reminds me of 17yr old me driving to school in the snow on cheap kumhos running late, sped up a lot and with 180* exhaust American V8 noise instead of 4 cylinder Camry with an auto noise.

He's not really "wildly sawing" at the wheel. His intentional steering inputs are smooth and deliberate. The fast motions are just him following the car's lead, something you can do with decent steering instead of modern zero-feel videogame steering.
RWD with no grip = keep the car on the bubble.
But yes, this is what it looks like when you finally have enough power to have wheelspin at the end of the longest straight

You can see the end coming about five seconds before it does.
In reply to Knurled:
And that's kinda how it happens. You go from superman to in a bush pretty darn quick. Even the best drivers make mistakes. Except Loeb.

Rally Acropolis 2006. Drag it to service on two wheels after flatting on stage and continuing anyway.
IIRC they made a rule not too long after that cars couldn't transit unless they had four operable wheels.
post edited - found good version
First time i saw this gt40 vid i commented about how the first time he went around the chicane onto the straight and all the drama he had keeping the thing straight while spinning and how long it took to catch the 194 car which was just smoothly accelerating.. That just characterizes the whole thing for me. He could have gone at least 90% as fast with 90% less drama. I don't consider his choices worth it as far as how hard to push and what was risked. My .02. Noone asks me to drive their GT40 in the rain, so take that for what it's worth.
GT40 + Rain + Nürburgring = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sMGpaTGqCw
Well it's done raining but pavement is still wet, lol.

Ford GT.
the original GT40 was a handful in the dry.. I could not imagine taking one for a gentle drive in the rain, let along racing.
Way more skill and balls than I will ever have
When I went through a recent racing game phase with my XBox (Forza mainly), this is EXACTLY how I remember the GT40 driving.
On a wet track it was just ridiculously....impossibly difficult to keep straight....so much so that it's comical.
But after seeing this video, it seems they were pretty much dead-on accurate in that way.
Hahaha, wow. That driver is somethin' else
