I'm pretty much ready to retire the Miata from street duty, cancel the insurance, and make it a 100% track-only car. Part of my plan was to buy a tow vehicle which would double as my daily driver, keep the Viper for weekends and fun, and haul the Miata to the track on a trailer. I was dead-set on the FJ Cruiser or the Ford Flex because I think they're both captain cool, but I might not really NEED a dual-purpose vehicle now.
(Enter the bread van)
So my dad now has a full-size retired bread truck (we call it the bun bus) that he picked up at auction recently. It is absolutely big enough to fit the Miata and he told me I should just use that to move the Miata around. Cool. Now I also have a place to sleep at the track.
My question now is how do I rig the truck to safely and legally tow the Miata? I wonder if I can even do it legally? I can literally open the rear gate and walk up to the seat and sit down. There are no internal walls or anything. I surmise that I can just bolt some super heavy duty tie-downs to the frame, through the floor, and use huge ratchet straps. What do you guys think? As much as I'd love an FJ or a Flex, they'd do worse on gas than the Viper; and the Volts are just SO DAMN COOL! I'd like my fleet to have a mid-to-full size sedan, the Viper, and the race car. Simple.
