It's incredibly difficult to get eyes on a rally car doing rally car like things, so yes, absolutely he is. His skillset may not be the greatest, though this incident was actually a fluke, (and Lucy is by far the better driver in the family) but he's developed a marketing plan that allows him to sustainably campaign various rally endeavors, and it's not merely from bringing 7 figures to the table to start, he doesn't lose money competing in rally.

I noticed that too. That video is a perfect example of why they say to practice emergency exit until it’s muscle memory; because when you really need to get out fast you might be upside down and on fire.
No comment at all on that trans snafu? Ok. Seems like a E36 M3ty situation but then again #1stworldproblems
In reply to BlueInGreen - Jon :
Has a lot less to do with 'muscle memory' and more to do with panic.
I've been in that situation a number of times and it's a lot to process in a very short period of time. Some people can't do it at all.
I despise his videos but I understand why people like them. He's a very good driver, and even the best drivers crash sometimes, but to use a hockey analogy, even the worst player on the worst team in a good league is an absolutely incredible athlete.

Some shoe salesman, I think.
How was his helmet cam less shaky than the usual videos on the Hoonigans youtube channel?
Seriously, though, major bummer, that was a neat car, I’m glad they got out of it unscathed.
Yeah, fire is scary. Fortunately I have never been in such an accident, but I know that after being T-boned while in college I just sat there for a few seconds trying to figure out what had just happened. The word "inconceivable" kept going through my head as I was looking at a green signal.
Anyway, I'm not a Ken Block fanboi, but I will give him major props for giving back to his fans. I snapped these after the Daytona GRC event. All of the other teams had pretty much packed up. Block was still signing autographs. And it wasn't a quick signature, either, as he took photos, signed whatever was handed his way, and chatted with everyone for a few. Classy.
I see 12 seconds from flames spotted to him being clear of the car. Yes that's not lightning fast but he did just go through a rock tumbler mere moments before. I challenge any of us to besting that time in the same situation.

That's the rock driver's were warned about. They even painted it to stand out. Still hit it and sent him tumbling. Rest is carbon history.
He's like the Nickelback of motorsports, people just love to hate him for some reason. He seems like a cool guy. Glad him and his co-driver are fine, that doesn't look fun.
The only thing I found surprising was the lack of fire-supression? Unless I missed it or something.

I think his win, break, or crash attitude has at least a bit to do with the hate. I know he’s not the only one like that, but I do recall years ago at 100 Acre Wood, someone was broken down on the side of the road and had their caution triangle out. He didn’t back off coming around the turn and ended up roosting the car with gravel and busting multiple windows.
Haven't met him in person, though. Off of the stages, he seems like a pretty decent guy.

"I think his win, break, or crash attitude" - that describes every pro driver with something on the line to me. I'm not big into rally, but I'm amazed what some of the drivers try to get away with mechanically and safety margin wise (professional and lower level).
In reply to accordionfolder :
Admittedly, he (and other well funded drivers) can get away with it, since if they can get the car back to service in (mostly) one piece, they’ve got a big enough team and enough spares to put it back together. There’s a lot of people in rally having to balance pushing to win against making sure they can finish.
I hope he practices getting out of the car blind folded after this. I don't understand the hate for him. Successful business man gets to live his dream has 6 WRC top tens, wins in the various other series, beating competitive people. Video games and name recognition...jeeze

Seems more like a course safety issue than a driver issue. If the course is hot, it's hot. Throw a red flag or the rally equivalent for it if the car needs to come off course before the course can be run safely. I know nothing about rally racing, but it seems like given the stage nature of it you can't have just one driver lifting for a caution corner like that and everyone else able to run flat out and have it be a level playing field. If I was racing for money / my living, I don't think I would lift in that situation unless it put people's safety at risk. The car's collateral damage.
