What are some options for a good quality, low-priced double-din touchscreen head unit with Apple CarPlay and XM capabilities? I require a physical control for volume (buttons or knob or whatever, no touchscreen for volume controls but everything else is fine controlled by the screen). I don't need GPS and I don't want to spend more than $500 or so.

I've looked at the Pioneer Avic series but they're way more money than I want to spend.

I've gotten completely spoiled by the Camaro's infotainment system and now that I have the Porsche back, driving it feels old and my only option is regular old terrestrial radio. BOO! I can't listen to My Brother, My Brother and Me on a stupid old PCM radio.

http://www.autopumpkin.com/ no personal experience, but I saw another MR2 owner have one of these.  Will probably end up with one in the near future.

I don't think any of those Android-based ones have Apple CarPlay. At least, those don't seem to.

This Sony checks all the boxes, has a rotary knob, and IMO a clean OEM look:  Sony AXV-X200

Oh, that one does look good. A little Googling found one that meets my XM requirement: https://www.crutchfield.com/S-uX3DLw20bhx/p_158XAV200/Sony-XAV-AX200SXM.html

My experience with those kinds of streaming units is that you need to control everything from the phone but the audio will stream through the stereo. I want all of my integration on-screen so I can plug the phone in and not have to touch it. And the Siri integration is nice, too. It is unfortunate how Apple locks down navigation apps on CarPlay :( But, I mean, really, how often do I ever need really in-depth navigation? (Not very.)

And I know I don't really need a backup camera on the 997. It's wicked easy to parallel park as it is, but the Camaro came with one. I'd never had one before. It makes parallel parking EVEN EASIER. It's super.

I got a headunit for my excursion. I thought I was going to need/want something with android carplay. When I went to Pacific Auto the guy showed me how I could get a non-"carplay" unit and still do all the same stuff and save a few hundred bucks. My headunit even has buttons as well as a touch screen. I can do everything from the unit. I do not have navi, but it's just an app away. I don't know about Apple and their locking down things so I can't help there.
