My new to me '96 Miata has arrived and here is the noise it was making: Link
I've changed the oil, is it HLA noise (although it sounds different than any of the other cars I've bad...) or something else?

Hard to tell from a video, but it sort of sounds like HLA's. What kind of oil did you use for your oil change? For reasons I don't fully understand, mine hates Mobile 1. Within a few hundred miles after a Mobile 1 oil change it sounds like a Model T. Switch back to dino juice and it quiets right down. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but I've tried it twice with the same results.
FWIW - if it is the HLA's, opinions vary wildly over whether its a problem and whether anything can be done about it.
Castrol high mileage dino, I've always had great luck with it on my other Miata's. I've found that synthetics seem to make it worse.....
Also, it's makes the noise all the time, it doesn't matter if it's hot or cold, been driven on a short trip, or a longer one....
I agree with kazoo on the noise. Motul shut up my 96's HLAs, but if it got hot with track work the sound would come back toward the end of the change cycle.
My '97 had a similar noise when I bought it. All the Miata guys I autocross with listened and said "lifters" and that it's normal with Miatas. Then one day I noticed a spark plug wire wiggle when I was working on the engine. I checked and number 3 was maybe 4 turns loose!!!!!!??
Torqued down all my plugs and quieted everything down. Then over the winter I changed the plugs and to remove them I didn't use the ratchet, just a socket and extension (less than hand tight is my point).
You may want to check your plugs is my point.
