So the other day I was replacing the power steering lines on my Stag when I made a rather boneheaded mistake. I forgot to disconnect the battery, and as I was wrestling with 40 year old frozen lines my wrench slipped and hit the stater leads and sparks resulted. This served to frighten me and I slid out from under the car and disconnected he battery. Once I got one of the new lines in it was time for me to head to work so I wrapped up and got the car ready to get out of my Dad's garage. I when to start it and there was silence. So what did I do with my wrench? The relay didn't even click and I knew that the battery had plenty of juice.I checked the fuses as I ran out to get to work and they looked fine as well. Did I fry the starter solenoid same how?

-Thanks for the help, Ryan.

Do you have power anywhere, or just a silent starter?

Do those cars have a master fusible link on them?

If the whole car is dead, it ain't the solenoid.

Start tracing voltage from your battery. Where do you have juice - power going in...any coming out when and where it should? starter solenoids are generally pretty tough, ignition switches not as much.

The car has power everywhere else, and the things that do work were still working. The starter is the only thing that isn't working as it should. I wanted to start going around with my test light but ran out of time, now I wouldn't be able to play with it till next weekend. have a picture for your trouble

Also I don't think there is a master fusible link, looking at wiring diagrams.

Could you have knocked the solenoid wire off when you hit it with the wrench?

I checked the connections after I tried to stat it and all looked good, but I need to check again. I need to look again when I don't have a time crunch and am pissed off

Pull the connections apart and clean them, you might have disturbed a marginal one. Same goes for the battery/cables.

Bad ground to body, you might have burned up the ground to the motor. Motor could be isolated now. Check that one first.

Just to be clear, was the wrench still shorting the starter wire to ground the whole time you were disconnecting the battery? Or did it fall out on its own as soon as you let go of it.

I know you let go of it because i have done this same thing too many times and i know how fast i let go when those sparks start flying.

The wrench was on the nut of the power steering line when it popped off and bounced from my hand to the starter wires and then to my face. So it was only there for a short time.

Ok, then i think we can assume that you did not melt anything important on the starter itself.

Still, i would start there. Is the starter solenoid built onto the starter, or separate?

Nothing to add, but I saw you at C & C last Saturday! The car is looking great, hopefully I'll have my Z out there one of these days! Good luck!

You'll need to log in to post.
