Removing a plain backing plate will sometimes marginally improve rotor cooling, typically at the expense of cooking the ball joint boot and grease.  Removing a ducted or scooped backing plate will almost never improve rotor cooling.

Any time I removed a backing plate from a disk system, I noted that the brakes would simply NOT WORK in rain if the trip involved long bouts of cruising.

That was a real shock the first time I went on a trip that would have me driving 2 1/2 hours without having to touch the brakes.  No deceleration for a loooong time except for a slight additional amount of downforce-related resistance due to intense butt pucker.
